3rd Annual USC Quench the Fire 5K/10K Run-Walk-Roll

Dec 6, 2009 8:30 AM

Description:
The USC Quench the Fire Run-Walk-Roll -- now in its third successful year -- was inspired by LAPD Detective Randy Blancq.

Det. Blancq's mother, Karlain, suffers from an intensely painful neurological disease known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD).

Since so little is known about this disease, Det. Blancq teamed up with Dr. Steven Richeimer, Dir. of The Pain Center at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, in order to promote RSD awareness and research.

Karlain Blancq is not alone. Jill Taylor, wife of LAPD Officer Harlan "Scott" Taylor, also suffers from RSD. In addition to unrelenting pain, RSD can result in immune system malfunction; severe arthritis; joint thickening; bone softening; muscle atrophy; and internal organ failure, often leaving the individual partially or totally disabled.

It is crippling physically, financially and emotionally.

RSD and other neuro-based chronic pain diseases are thought to affect millions of Americans -- and police officers and their families are no exception.

Let's create a blue wave on the 5K/10K trail this year, and help all who cannot run, walk or roll with us!
