Honorable Harold N. Crowder

In Memoriam
Honorable Harold N. Crowder
1/22/26 – 3/16/09

The last remaining member of the legendary LAPD “Hat Squad” has passed away. Judge Harold Crowder died peacefully Monday morning surrounded by family and friends.

After serving with the Air Corps in WWII and the Army in the Korean War, Harold left the service as a Second Lieutenant. Eventually, Harold and three others from the 40th Infantry Division came together again in the robbery division of the LAPD. Their tough tactics and dapper attire quickly made them known nationally to law enforcement and criminals alike during the 1950’s and early 1960’s. The foursome has been used as models for characters in movies, TV shows and even comic books. After retiring from the Department, Harold pursued a career in law and served for 30 years on the bench. He retired as a Superior Court Judge in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Brian, daughters Sheryl and Casey, and five grandchildren. Harold was laid to rest on Monday, March 30, at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills. .
