LAPPL announces contract deal with City of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2011 – The Los Angeles City Council has approved a new labor contract between the City and the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), which represents more than 9,900 Los Angeles police officers from the rank of lieutenant and below. The Council vote follows ratification of the contract by the LAPPL membership, who overwhelmingly supported the deal.

LAPPL President Paul M. Weber commented, “We were pleased with the membership’s ratification and now the City Council’s approval of our contract. We can move forward knowing our working conditions and compensation remain fair as we address the challenges our city faces.

“Of the 3,598 members who turned out to vote, 96 percent backed the agreement. They understood that given the city's economic situation, it is a fair deal for both parties. This contract recognizes the outstanding work and dedication of LAPD officers, who have driven down crime to record levels, and it reflects the shared desire of the LAPPL and City leaders for a stable labor agreement in the face of difficult times.”

Financial highlights of the three-year deal, effective from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014, include:

  • Officers will continue to receive compensatory time off in lieu of cash payment for the overtime they work; this will save the city $300 million over the term of the contract.
  • Officers, who have not received a cost of living allowance (COLA) since July 2008, will forego an increase this year. They will receive a modest COLA increase in the final two years of the contract.
  • Officers will pay the entire increased healthcare premium this fiscal year.
