Los Angeles, October 20, 2010 – On behalf of all members of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, President Paul M. Weber responded to the tragic news that Los Angeles Police Officer Joshua J. Cullins, who was serving as a United States Marine in Afghanistan, has died while bravely serving our Country.
“Joshua was a highly respected Marine Staff Sergeant and LAPD officer who was honorably serving our country as a Marine reservist in Afghanistan when he was killed,” says Weber. “This is a great loss for the LAPD and for everyone who knew him and witnessed his commitment to upholding his duty and honor as a police officer and a Marine. Our deepest condolences go out to his parents, family and friends.
"Details about his death are not clear at this time, however many people may recall when Joshua was injured back in July, and how his fellow officers from LAPD’s Central Division turned to YouTube to send a pair of get well soon messages to their friend and colleague. As recounted in a must-read story by Los Angeles Times writer Bob Pool, officers recorded personal messages to Cullins on video starting off with Chief Beck. The complete two-part video called "Hunter Ackerman — Welcome Home” can be seen on YouTube and shows how Joshua touched so many with his bravery and sacrifice.”
Officer Cullins is the second member of the LAPD to die fighting for our country in the Iraq/Afghanistan conflict. Robert J. Cottle, an LAPD SWAT officer and Sergeant Major with a United States Marine Corps Reserve battalion, was killed in the line of duty while serving in Afghanistan on March 24.
