3 Kansas City Officers Shot, Wounded In Shooting During Undercover Drug Deal

Three Kansas City, Kansas, police officers and three suspects were injured in a shooting Wednesday afternoon during an attempted arrest related to a drug investigation, according to police. About 3 p.m., the shooting broke out after police tried to arrest suspects in an undercover investigation of fentanyl dealing, police said. All were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening. In a message posted to Twitter about 4:30 p.m., the Kansas City Police Department said it had been asked to investigate the shooting. Gia Bleu was on FaceTime with a friend at the house across the street when she heard brakes and a crash. That was followed by multiple shots being fired, including what sounded like a machine gun. “I got down on the floor,” she said. “It was very loud, it sounded like Grand Theft Auto, like the video game.” After the shooting stopped, she looked outside and saw officers running with shields. “It was very dramatic,” Bleu said.

Suspect Arrested In Shooting Of Rookie NYPD Officer

Federal officers nabbed the suspect wanted in this week’s shooting of a rookie NYPD cop in Queens, according to police sources. Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested the accused gunman at his home in the Bronx neighborhood of Wakefield on Thursday night, the sources said. Earlier Thursday afternoon, authorities doubled the reward for the suspect’s arrest and conviction to $20,000. Wounded NYPD Officer Brett Boller underwent surgery Wednesday night and was expected to be released from Jamaica Hospital early next week, a source said. Boller had been flagged down by an MTA bus driver during an argument between passengers on Jamaica Ave. on Wednesday afternoon, NYPD Chief of Department James Essig said. When the 22-year-old officer boarded the bus to find out what was going on, the suspect muscled his way off and fled down 161st St., cops said. Boller and his partner gave chase. Around mid-block, Boller caught up with the man, Essig said. As they grappled, the suspect pulled a gun and shot the officer in the leg. As Boller fell to the pavement bleeding, his partner fired twice at the fleeing gunman, according to Essig.

What Is Tranq? Recent Skid Row Deaths Raise Concerns About Dangerous ‘Zombie Drug' Xylazine

Police are investigating the deaths of three people found inside a building in downtown Los Angeles that provides housing to underprivileged residents in the Skid Row area and detectives believe the deaths may have been drug-related. The bodies of a woman and two men were discovered when firefighters responded to a medical emergency at the 649 Lofts in the 600 block of Wall Street around 3:14 p.m. Wednesday. Authorities have since been looking into the possibility of drugs playing a role in their deaths. An official cause of death hasn't been released. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued a warning last month about a drug called xylazine - also known as "tranq" - that's been been raising concerns. Xylazine is not an opioid, but it is typically mixed with one like fentanyl. Narcan, a lifesaving nasal spray, can help with opioid overdoses, but cannot reverse the effects of xylazine.

Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Found For The First Time In Los Angeles County

An antibiotic-resistant bacteria was discovered for the first time in Los Angeles County and experts are concerned, saying the fast-spreading bacteria poses great health risks, especially for those who are immunocompromised. The super bacteria was found by USC professor Adam Smith and his team at the two largest wastewater facilities in L.A. County — Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant in Playa del Rey and the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson. The bacteria and its associated gene renders colistin, a “last resort” antibiotic, completely ineffective. Colistin is used for serious infections or conditions that can’t be treated with or haven’t responded to antibiotics like penicillin. Smith said although this particular type of antibiotic-resistant gene has been found elsewhere in the world, this is the first time it’s been found in L.A. He said wastewater is a good indication of the public’s overall health which is why testing should be done regularly to track down burgeoning illnesses.

LA County Launches 40-Point Gun Violence Prevention Platform

The Los Angeles County Office of Violence Prevention announced Friday a comprehensive 40-point plan to tackle the recent increase in gun violence in the area. The OVP's platform comes in response to a recent increase in killings involving guns in LA County. The platform includes "a broad range of evidence-based and innovative strategies spanning prevention, intervention, and healing" to address the issue of gun violence in LA County, officials said. The OVP said it identified four priorities as critical first steps toward making LA County safe. These four priorities include legislation, social connections and healing services, school safety and services, and gun violence restraining orders awareness and enforcement. To ensure the success of the platform, the OVP will work closely with community leaders, law enforcement agencies, and public health officials to implement the 40-point plan. County Supervisor Janice Hahn, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer, and Dr. Susan Stone, LA Care's senior medical director of utilization and care management services, are expected to take part in the news conference.

COVID Numbers Keep Dropping In LA County; Officials Urge Booster Shots

The number of new COVID-19 infections in Los Angeles County dropped by 22% over the past week compared to the previous week, while virus-related deaths and hospitalizations also fell, health officials said. The drops were reported as the county Department of Public Health again urged residents — particularly those in vulnerable groups — to receive the latest vaccine booster shot to guard against severe illness from infection. Health officials said only 42% of residents age 65 and over — who are most vulnerable to hospitalization and death from the virus — have received the most recent bivalent booster, which was engineered to specifically protect against the prevalent strain of COVID. “I am feeling optimistic about the COVID numbers in Los Angeles County, and I hope to see them continue to decline,” Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. “However, it is difficult to overlook the fact that people continue to die and be deeply impacted by this disease, more than three years on. I fear that people do not know the full risks, or that protection is available.

Special Election To Fill Disgraced, Former Council President Nury Martinez's Vacant Seat Expected To Head To Runoff Vote

The special election to fill the vacated seat of disgraced former Council President Nury Martinez is expected to head to a runoff after a dismal voter turnout. While Council District Six, which includes North Hills, Lake Balboa, Van Nuys and Sun Valley, contains 118,000 eligible voters only 13,000 — about 11% — casted a ballot. According to the Los Angeles City and County election officials, with $7.6 million spent on this race, taxpayers paid $584 per vote cast. "Wow, it's kind of sad," said Judith Miranda, who lives in Panorama City, another neighborhood in the district. Miranda did not vote in the special election. "Special elections are incredibly undemocratic," said political science professor Fernando Guerra. "Whoever wins this will probably end up in that position for about 13 years." A similar situation is playing out in Council District 10, which is the seat once held by Councilmember Mark Ridley-Thomas. Yet another disgraced councilmember, Ridley-Thomas was convicted in a federal corruption case.
