The public seems likely to support Gov. Jerry Brown's proposal to move public safety services from state government to local government, officials said during a panel discussion today.
In a state budget plan released this month, Brown proposed to give counties responsibility for more than 40,000 lower-level offenders and parole violators.
A bipartisan panel of state and local government experts discussed the governor's realignment plan and results of a recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California. PPIC sponsored the panel discussion held at the California State Association of Counties Conference Center in downtown Sacramento.
The PPIC poll found that seven out of 10 likely voters favor a shift in revenue from the state to local governments. The same poll also found that frustration with state government remains high, suggesting that voters want more services at the local level, PPIC President Mark Baldassare said.
