Suspects In San Pedro Park Shooting Still At Large; 8th Victim Found At Hospital
Community leaders are calling for better security and enforcement after two unpermitted events bringing hundreds of people to a usually family-friendly San Pedro ended with a fatal shooting. Two people were killed Sunday in the gunfire that erupted at Peck Park, in the 500 block of Western Avenue. A man and four women were immediately identified as having been wounded, and police now say a sixth person drove themselves to the hospital with a gunshot wound. All six who were wounded are in stable condition, according to the LAPD. The shots were fired as hundreds of people were at the park — as many as 500 for an unpermitted car show, and even more for a softball game between teams of former gang members looking to bring peace. The gunfire is believed to have occurred near the softball game, at the same field where Roterria Scott's 10-year-old son's baseball team won their league championship just the weekend before. "We would never imagined that on a beautiful Sunday like it was, that people would be getting murdered and shot," Scott said. Scott, her son, and several members of the community gathered at the park Monday to call for more enforcement of park permits and security.

Murders Involving Homeless On The Rise. Westside Feels Impact
A report released from the nonprofit organization Crosstown shows a rising homicide rate across Los Angeles–and even more concerning is that one aspect of the increase in killings is among the homeless. Last year, 85 people experiencing homelessness in the city were murdered, the highest number ever recorded, according to Los Angeles Police Department data. Crosstown reported that number represented a 47% increase from 58 unhoused victims the previous year, and a 102% spike over the 42 victims in 2019. According to information the Westside Current obtained through a public records request–on the Westside, 62% of homicides last year were homeless related. Although, unlike the citywide number, not all victims were unhoused. Last June a homeless man was brutally stabbed to death in his tent on the Venice Boardwalk. Pacific officers arrested 38-year-old Michael McClain, of Venice, who was booked for the murder of 49- year old Michael Hall. Both the victim and suspect were persons experiencing homelessness, according to police. LAPD officers were called to an encampment located in the area of Ocean Front Walk and Dudley Avenue. When officers arrived, they found Hall who had suffered blunt force trauma to his head.

What's going on with French bulldogs? These dogs, it appears, are being stolen more frequently from their pet owners than in prior years. The Suffolk County Police on Long Island, N.Y., shared this note on Monday about seven stolen French bulldogs in the early morning hours. "Suffolk County Police are currently investigating a robbery that occurred over the weekend in Shirley where suspects stole 7 French bulldog puppies," the department noted in a tweeted message. "Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS," the police continued. More information has come out about it as well from authorities. "An unknown person or people broke into a detached building at approximately 3:15 a.m.," noted LongIsland.com on Monday, "and stole two six-month-old French bulldogs and five one-month-old French bulldog puppies." The owner, who was reportedly asleep, did not awaken during the burglary. But that is not the only case of stolen French bulldogs lately.

'Missing A Big Piece Of The Puzzle': California Deputies Remember Fallen LEO A Year Later
A solemn sight greets SWAT team members in their basement locker room at the Kern County Sheriff's Office headquarters. A black flag bearing badge number 1392 drapes a table where slain Deputy Phillip Campas always sat during meetings with dozens of SWAT members. One year after he was killed in the line of duty, no one claims his spot. Campas died July 25, 2021, in a Wasco mass shooting which also left the shooter dead. Jose Manuel Ramirez, 47, killed his wife, Viviana Ruiz Ramirez, and sons Jose Manuel Ramirez III, 24, and Angel Ramirez, 17. Campas and fellow SWAT member Senior Deputy Dizander Guerrero were responding to the house when bullets hit them both. Guerrero survived, but Campas died at Kern Medical. "(It feels) like something is missing," said KCSO SWAT team member Ralph Lomas, who is also Phillip Campas' cousin. "(The SWAT team is) just missing a big piece of the puzzle." Campas' death didn't just impact the SWAT team, which is like a family, Lomas noted. Everyone in the KCSO knew Campas because he was a recruit training officer, served on the honor guard and excelled at shooting guns on the range. He was a leader on the SWAT team, was revered as a Parris Island drill instructor in the Marine Corps, and achieved No. 1 in the KCSO academy and No. 1 when trying out for the SWAT team.

A police sergeant with more than two decades on the force is now facing battery and assault charges months after he grabbed a female officer by the throat and wielded pepper spray during a heated arrest in Sunrise. LA County's Indoor Mask Mandate Could Come Back This Week
If it feels like a lot more people you know have been catching COVID-19 recently, it's not just your imagination. Cases are on the rise again fueled by highly contagious omicron subvariants. Boosters don't seem to be preventing most people from getting sick multiple times. And, this week, LA County is poised to bring back the indoor mask mandate. "It's very likely that it's going to happen and if not by the end of this week perhaps next week or sometime before the end of the year," Alice Benjamin, a registered nurse and clinical nurse specialist, said. "I think it's important for people to understand that we need to get in a mind of readiness." Infection rates aren't the only thing going up, so are the number of people being hospitalized for COVID. "Rates are up and it's not just infection rates but it's the COVID positive hospitalization rates which have triggered this," Benjamin said. LA County has also seen a steady increase in the number of COVID related deaths. "Just at the end of last week we were seeing 100 deaths a weeks from COVID and just a month ago it was at 50," Benjamin said. "This mask mandate might be a very good idea."

California Child Among 2 In US Diagnosed With Monkeypox, Officials Say
Two children have been diagnosed with monkeypox in the U.S., one of whom was in California, health officials said Friday. The child in California is a toddler, and the other is an infant who is not a U.S. resident, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The children were described as being in good health and receiving treatment. How they caught the disease is being investigated, but officials think it was through household transmission. Other details weren't immediately disclosed. Los Angeles County had a reported 147 cases of monkeypox as of July 21. Due to demand and lack of availability, pre-registration for the monkeypox vaccine was paused by the county July 20. Hundreds of doses of JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccines from Riverside County's limited supply were distributed to health clinics in the Coachella Valley, a Riverside University Health System spokesman said Friday.
