City leaders and Los Angeles Police Department brass will be on hand this week with family members of some of the 241 officers who passed away in the line of duty for an annual memorial ceremony featuring a rifle volley, a volunteer choir and a helicopter flyover. The Wednesday morning ceremony is expected to have Mayor Karen Bass and other elected officials on hand, with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell presiding. Traditional police honors, a roll call of fallen officers, a riderless horse, a rifle volley, a missing-man formation helicopter flyover, bagpipers playing Amazing Grace, a solo bugler playing Taps and an “End of Watch Broadcast” were planned. The Memorial Ceremony is also to include performances by the LAPD Choir, which consists of a group of sworn and civilian LAPD employees, who join up and perform on a volunteer basis. “At the conclusion of the program, family members, friends and partners of fallen officers will share an opportunity of remembrance and reflection as they place a long stem rose near their loved one’s name plate on the Memorial Wall” in the courtyard at LAPD headquarters, according to an event announcement.

Residents alarmed by multiple vacant building fires near downtown LA apartment complex
Residents living near a cluster of vacant buildings in downtown Los Angeles say they are increasingly worried after several nearby properties caught fire in recent months — including one blaze that erupted just feet from their apartment complex. New cellphone video obtained exclusively by FOX 11 shows a massive fire tearing through a building on Hope Street around 4 a.m. on Mother’s Day, sending flames shooting high into the sky near occupied apartments. "It was really hot in there. I had to back up at one point. It felt like I was almost melting," said resident Alex Paulson, who recorded the fire on his cellphone. In the video, Paulson can be heard yelling, "My building is about to catch on bleeping fire." Paulson said he and his neighbors woke up to smoke, sirens and emergency alarms as firefighters rushed to the scene. "Over the loudspeaker — they’re like, ‘Residents please get out, this is real,’" another neighbor told FOX 11.
4 Southern California wildfires that burned nearly 23,000 acres nearing full containment
More than a week after a series of large wildfires broke out across Southern California and burned nearly 23,000 acres of land, firefighters are finally reaching full containment. The series of fires, which forced tens of thousands of people to flee from their homes in the midst of hot and dry weather, took place in a variety of Southern California topographies. By far the largest fire erupted on Santa Rosa Island, part of the Channel Islands National Park, on May 15. It quickly grew to engulf more than 10,000 acres before firefighting aircraft were finally able to reach the location and begin working at mitigating the blaze. It's estimated that at least three historic buildings were destroyed and at the latest update, firefighters said that 18,379 acres of the rare vegetation on the island had burned. Video from park rangers did show, however, that the Torrey pines, which only grow on Santa Rosa Island and along the San Diego coast, somehow escaped destruction. The investigation into what caused the fire remains underway, but firefighters said they knew it was human-caused and the U.S. Coast Guard said that it may have been caused by flares from a stranded boater who crashed his boat into the island the day the fire ignited.
