Funeral next week for former LAPD Chief Gates

A funeral for former Los Angeles police Chief Daryl Gates is set for next week at a downtown cathedral.

Services for Gates will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. A visitation is scheduled Monday from noon to 8 p.m. in Deaton Auditorium at police headquarters.

Gates, who served as chief from 1978 to 1992, died Friday of cancer at his Dana Point home.

Gates was chief when Rodney King was beaten in 1991 and when the officers accused in that case were acquitted. The trial's result triggered four days of rioting that left dozens dead and more than $1 billion in damage.
