Governor gets bill to keep cell phones from inmates

The Senate voted 34-0 Monday to send Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a bill that would make it illegal to smuggle a cell phone to a state prison inmate or to possess one while in prison.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, passed the Assembly unanimously last week.

The measure would make it a misdemeanor to possess or smuggle a cell phone into prisons. Corrections officials have cracked down on possession of cell phones in prisons but say they have been stymied by the fact that, up to now, it has not been illegal to have them in a prison.
