Gunman opens fire on off-duty officer in South L.A.

A gunman opened fire today on an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

The undercover Newton Division vice officer was not hurt even thought the assailant fired several shots before fleeing in a green Chevrolet Tahoe with chrome rims, investigators said.

The shooting occurred at 4:12 p.m. near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. and Avalon boulevards. Police said the assailant pulled up next to the officer's car and opened fire.
