Coroner's officials reported 11 killings in Los Angeles County between April 26 and May 2, bringing the year-to-date total to 222, according to data collected for the Times' Homicide Report database. Over the same time period last year, 18 people were killed, two fewer than 2008.
April began with 21 killings reported by the coroner in the first seven days, 12 in the city of Los Angeles, raising concern that long-falling homicide numbers might start rising again.
In the three weeks since, homicides declined each week.
The county saw seven multiple killings in the month, two last week alone.
Manuel Reyes, 85, and his sister Rita Morales, 87, were beaten to death with a hammer Sunday in the 7000 block of Eton Avenue in Canoga Park, according to authorities. Morales' 63-year old son, Arthur Reyes Morales was arrested at the scene in connection with their deaths.
One day earlier in the in 1000 block of East Mission Boulevard in Pomona, Allen Alexander, 48, and Michael McCall, 44, were shot to death while sitting in a parked car, according to Pomona police officers. The shooting took place about 10:30 p.m.
In all, eight of the most recent 11 homicide victims were shot.
Jonathan Val, 17, was among the shooting victims.
Investigators say Val was standing on a sidewalk in the 300 block of North Avenue 57 in Highland Park about 4:10 p.m. when a vehicle drove up and the passenger fired numerous rounds. Val was struck twice, once in the chest and the back, before he fled on foot and eventually collapsed on the street. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Martinez was found by a neighbor in a garage about 6:44 a.m. Authorities were called and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
