John W. Mack has been unanimously re-elected president of the Police Commission, the LAPD's civilian oversight board. Alan Skobin was re-elected vice-president.

Mack, former president of the Los Angeles Urban League, said the commission has been the "driving force" behind LAPD improvements, including video cameras in squad cars to improve accountability.

"I look forward to more accomplishments that benefit the diverse communities of Los Angeles," Mack said.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa praised the two men for serving with "passion, integrity and dedication."

L.A. crime rates dropped significantly last year, despite the recession, with killings down 17 percent. The murder rate had climbed slightly through this year before heading back into negative territory again late last month.
