A man was in custody after holding Los Angeles police at bay for several hours Tuesday after a woman was fatally shot in a Hollywood apartment complex.

The incident began about 3 a.m. when officers responded to a "shots fired" call in the 6500 block of Hollywood Boulevard. Officers found a woman lying in a hallway after being shot several times, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The 33-year-old woman was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the LAPD said.

Police said they found Paul Matthew Allee in the the woman's apartment. Allee, 32, refused to leave the apartment, sparking a standoff that ended about 7 a.m. when he was subdued with a Taser device, according to the LAPD.

Police said officers recovered a handgun, believed to be the weapon used on the woman. Detectives were investigating the relationship between Allee and the woman.

Since January 2007, at least 47 homicides have been reported within two miles of Tuesday's slaying, according to a database compiled by The Times' Homicide Report.

Allee was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held in lieu of $1 million in bail.
