LAPD To Increase Patrols After Hamas Attack, Ensuring “The Safety Of All"

Police were increasing security and patrols around Jewish institutions in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica Saturday following the Hamas attack against Israel. "The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the turmoil in the Middle East and lives lost. In those areas where we serve both our Jewish and Muslim communities, we will be conducting extra patrol to ensure the safety of all," LAPD Chief Michel Moore wrote on X. "We are appalled by this act of terrorism by Hamas against the citizens and civilian communities in Israel," Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold said. "We call on President Biden and Congress to act swiftly in support of Israel. Additionally, we hope all peace-loving nations of the world and the United Nations, will condemn this senseless violence. Our hearts are with the people of Israel as we stand together and support Israel defending itself and condemn this heinous act." Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger weighed in with a statement, saying, "Hamas' violent and deadly attack on Israel was nothing short of barbaric," said "I want the Jewish community to know I stand in solidarity with them and, in no uncertain terms, condemn this assault. "Violence abroad has a ripple effect and reaches every corner of the globe," Barger said. "I send my prayers to those in Israel who are suffering due to this traumatic attack on their lives and all our local Jewish communities who are also feeling their pain."

Video: Gunman Shoots At People On Sidewalk After Fight Outside Hollywood Nightclub

Newly released video shows a frightening shooting outside a nightclub in Hollywood that prompted police officers to fire back at the gunman. Officers who were patrolling the area responded to the nightclub near the intersection of Ivar Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard around 1:45 a.m. on Sept. 9, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Security guards had flagged down the officers because of a fight outside the club. In the footage released by the department, a man believed to be involved in the fight is seen getting into a parked white Mercedes before driving it into the middle of the street and opening fire toward people on the sidewalk. Officers fired back at the driver, who then took off. A short chase ensued, but the suspect managed to evade authorities. Nobody was hit by any of the gunfire. Police eventually tracked down the man, identified as Albert Tamrazian, and arrested him.

Woman Shot Multiple Times On 6th Street Bridge

A woman was shot multiple times on the 6th Street Bridge early Monday. The woman, whose age and name have not been released, was shot around 12:20 a.m. on the bridge that connects Boyle Heights and the Arts District of downtown Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. She was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The shooter has not been identified and no description of them was available, but witnesses told police they fled in a silver sedan. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details were available.

LAPD Grapples With Officer Safety Concerns As DACA Recruits Face Firearms Restrictions

The Los Angeles Police Department is confronting a unique challenge as two of its newest recruit officers are DACA recipients, often referred to as Dreamers. While California has passed a law allowing noncitizens to serve as police officers, this decision has raised significant concerns due to federal restrictions on firearm possession by DACA recipients. "They kind of backed themselves into a corner because federal law dictates that the DACA recipients although eligible to work in the United States legally or in California, they can't take their guns home. They can't possess guns, they can't buy ammo, and so they're not police officers, technically armed police officers when they go home," explained retired LAPD Background Investigator Ken Roybal. The core issue at hand is officer safety. When these officers are off duty, they are unable to carry firearms, leaving them vulnerable to potential threats. With the increasing exposure of police officers' identities, there is a real concern that they could be targeted, even when they are not on duty. This situation puts their safety at risk, both at work and at home.

Toddler Found Wandering Street In Westlake Area

A child believed to be about 2 years old was found walking alone in the dark during the early morning hours in the Westlake area Tuesday. Police were called around 4:15 a.m. regarding a child wearing a white shirt who was wandering in the 400 block of Burlington Avenue. An investigation indicated the 2-year-old was found by a good Samaritan who stayed with the child until officers arrived, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson said. Video showed officers putting a sweater on the child, who appeared to be crying at times. The toddler was taken to a local police station while authorities worked to locate family members. The family did eventually arrive at the police station but no details were provided about how the child ended up alone on the street. Police said that the incident remains under investigation.

Man In Custody After Scaling Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel And Claiming To Have A Bomb

Authorities closed Santa Monica Pier after a man climbed onto the Ferris wheel and claimed to be carrying a bomb, police officials said Monday. In aerial footage from local TV, the man could be seen on the wheel carrying a dark bag. Police and firefighters were at the scene, and around 4:30 p.m., the man had climbed down and been taken into custody by officers gathered beneath the ride. The Santa Monica Police Department had earlier announced via its account on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, that officers were “dealing with a person in crisis.” They subsequently evacuated the pier and Pacific Park. In an interview with The Times before the man was taken into custody, Lt. Erika Aklufi said officers were attempting to extract riders from the Ferris wheel while they communicated with the man to “try to get him to come down.” “Out of an abundance of caution,” Aklufi said, “we’re going to act as if he does [have a bomb] until we can prove that he doesn’t.” Video showed firefighters using a lift to remove riders from the Ferris wheel.

Florida Man Tries To Burn Deputy’s Face With Meth Torch

A Florida man has been arrested after he allegedly tried to burn a deputy’s face with a torch used for smoking methamphetamines, WWSB reported. Gerardo Luna Jr. was wanted on several warrants, police say. Deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office surrounded his house to arrest him and a deputy knocked on the door. Luna stepped out the back door, saw deputies and ran back inside, according to the report. When deputies established a line of communication with him, he told them all he wanted to do was smoke. He lit a torch and used a glass pipe to smoke methamphetamines. Deputies then rammed the back door but were only able to open it halfway. Luna braced the door with his body to prevent officers from getting in. Luna then attempted to use his meth torch to burn a deputy in the face but was unsuccessful. Another deputy was able to break the door off its hinges and Luna was arrested without further incident, according to the report.

4 Chicago Officers Hurt Tn Traffic Crash Following Shooting Outside Police Station

Charges were pending for four suspects Saturday night following a shooting near a Chicago police station and a traffic crash that injured four responding officers, authorities said. The chaotic chain of events began around 3:30 p.m. when a vehicle approached a 24-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman walking near the 3rd District police station in the 7000 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, police said. At least one person from inside the vehicle opened fire, striking the man in the thigh and grazing the woman’s backside, police said. Both were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition. Police located the suspected shooter’s vehicle in the 5400 block of South State Street in the Washington Park neighborhood. As officers responded, the officers were involved in a crash that required Chicago Fire Department assistance in freeing four trapped officers before taking them to local hospitals. Authorities have not released conditions of the police officers. Four people were arrested and two handguns were recovered, police said. Charges were pending late Saturday as detectives continued their investigation.

Violent Two-Car Crash Leaves Three Hospitalized In Van Nuys

Three people were hospitalized in a violent two-car crash in Van Nuys early Monday evening. According to Los Angeles Fire Department, the crash happened a little before 6:45 p.m. near the 7900 block of N. Sepulveda Boulevard. Circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear, but the force of the collision caused one of the cars to veer into a light pole, trapping the one of the women inside. Firefighters were able to rescue the woman from within, and transport her, along with the two drivers of the cars to nearby hospitals for treatment. The woman who was trapped is said to be in critical condition, while the female driver of that car is in serious condition. The male driver of the other car is in fair condition, firefighters said.

Magnitude 2.6 Earthquake Shakes Silver Lake Area

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake was reported near Silver Lake on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake was reported at 8:57 a.m. and had a depth of 6.7 miles (10.9 km). The epicenter was about half a mile east of Silver Lake, the USGS said. Silver Lake is about 3.6 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Over 170 people said they felt the quake, according to the USGS felt report.

Fire Erupts At A West LA Homeless Encampment Near Sawtelle Blvd.

LAFD responded to a fire yesterday morning at the sight of a homeless encampment on the 1100 block of Clover Avenue near the corner of Sawtelle and National Boulevards. Local residents and business owners reported the blaze and uploaded images to the Citizen and Nextdoor apps. Users commented that an unidentified woman in her mid-to-late 40's had been living in a tent on the sidewalk just outside the parking lot for a Starbucks. The Current reached out to the LAFD who confirmed that there were no injuries reported. According to LAFD statistics, at least two dozen homeless encampment fires ranging in various sizes have been reported on the Westside since January, 2023.

In this place, no one called him racist, or a disgrace, or sinvergüenza — someone without shame — for ignoring calls to step down in the wake of a scandal that drew nationwide condemnation.
