Mayor Villaraigosa schedules summit about bike safety

Having suffered a broken elbow in a cycling mishap, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has scheduled a town hall meeting to discuss ways to improve safety for bicyclists in Los Angeles.

Cyclists will be able to address the mayor and transit officials during the summit, scheduled for 9-11 a.m. Aug. 16, at Metropolitan Transportation Authority headquarters, 1 Gateway Plaza.

"Let's get together to talk about what we need to do to make the streets safer for cyclists," Villaraigosa said.

The mayor knows first-hand about the dangers of riding on city streets. While riding his bike on a recent Sunday, he was cut off by a taxi driver and fell, breaking his elbow.

Among the areas the mayor wants explore are the city's draft bicycle plan to build more than 1,600 miles of bikeway; the Los Angeles Police Department's enforcement policy and what the MTA could do to include bike lanes in its transit plans.
