Some streets in downtown Los Angeles will be closed briefly Tuesday and Wednesday for a public visitation and private funeral services for Joshua J. Cullins, a Marine reservist and Los Angeles police officer killed in Afghanistan.
Cullins, 28, was killed Oct. 18 by a secondary bomb as he and his unit investigated an earlier roadside explosion in Helmand province. He is the second LAPD officer to be killed while deployed overseas in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ronald F. Deaton Civic Auditorium at 100 W. 1st St. Main Street will be closed between 1st and 2nd streets during the event, which is open to the public.
A private, nondenominational service will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, followed by an honors ceremony in the cathedral's plaza. Morning commuters can expect partial closures of Temple, Grand, Hill and Spring streets, officials said. After the service a private funeral procession will transport Cullins' body to his hometown of Simi Valley for burial.
Cullins patroled the downtown area and was being courted by the department's bomb squad because of his expertise as an explosive ordnance officer with the Marine Corps Reserve.
