A small city outside Los Angeles is considering merging its police force with a neighboring city under scrutiny for officer-involved shootings. The Bell City Council is set to vote on a proposal Monday night to merge with the Maywood-Cudahy Police Department.
Gilbert Jara, president of the Bell Police Officers Association, says officers oppose the move, noting that about half of Bell's force would lose their jobs.
The Maywood department recently lost its insurance coverage because of the city's failure to hire a permanent city manager and recent officer-involved shootings.
A merger with Bell may help Maywood regain its liability insurance.
Bell and Maywood are small cities about six miles southeast of Los Angeles.
