Three men accused of tangling with police during celebrations after the Lakers' NBA title win and victory parade have received jail sentences of several months, the L.A. city attorney's office said Thursday.
Gerry Adams, 25, and Cameron Perry, 33, were in a crowd confronted by undercover LAPD officers after they saw people throwing firecrackers and water bottles off a freeway overpass during last month's parade.
The officers identified themselves and ordered the group off the roadway. But Adams punched an officer in the jaw, city prosecutors said. As officers restrained Adams, Perry used both his fists to punch another officer in the back of the neck.
Adams received a sentence of three months in jail after pleading no contest to one count of resisting arrest. Adams, who was on probation in two other cases, received an additional 30 days in jail for the violations.
Perry entered a plea of no contest to one count of resisting arrest and one count of battery on a police officer and was sentenced to 36 months probation and 90 days in jail.
In addition, Jonathan Vasquez pleaded guilty to one count of resisting arrest and was sentenced to three months in jail and to pay restitution to an LAPD bike patrol officer who authorities said the 20-year-old tried to pelt with a rock. All three men have been ordered to stay away from the Staples Center.
In all, 45 people were arrested in connection with the violence that broke out around the Staples Center on June 17 after the Lakers' NBA championship victory.
So far, city prosecutors have obtained six convictions against 10 people stemming from the post-victory celebrations. They have prosecuted three others who were among seven arrested at the parade.
