Young Man Shot In Head After Dispute At Gas Station In Canoga Park, Is In Critical Condition

A male in his late teens or early 20s was found with a gunshot wound to his head at an Arco gas station at around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning in Canoga Park. The shooting took place at he intersection of Vanowen Street and Independence Avenue. When officers arrived, the victim was still conscious. The victim was transported to the hospital and is listed in critical condition. The suspects were a group of men who may have gotten into some kind of dispute with the victim. Police say the group of 4 to 5 men fled in two vehicles, a white BMW and a white Dodge Charger. It appears that the suspects and victim did not know each other. Police are reviewing nearby footage for the investigation.

North Hollywood Man Arrested For Fentanyl Overdose Death Of 19-Year-Old In 2021

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for the 2021 overdose death of a 19-year-old Glendale resident. Heriberto Galvan, of North Hollywood, was arrested on Friday after a lengthy investigation found him to be a suspect in the overdose death of 19-year-old Tevan Gevorkian in December 2021. "Gevorkian died after he and a friend unknowingly ingested the fentanyl," said a statement from Glendale Police Department. "The friend also suffered a medical emergency but was transported to the hospital and recovered." Over the next 16 months, detectives were able to trace the fentanyl back to Galvan. He has been indicted on several charges, including distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and multiple weapons charges. Galvan remains in federal custody.

Body Found On Metro Red Line Train In Hollywood

A body was found on a Metro red line train in Hollywood Tuesday night. The Los Angeles City Fire Department, the Los Angeles Police Department and the Metro Transit responded to reports of a body that was found on a red line train. Metro authorities stopped train traffic on the Union Station destinations. The LAPD is investigating the incident and trying to find a cause of death. They do not believe that foul play played a factor. The LA County Coroner's Office removed the body from the scene. Train activity was resumed overnight.

Video Captures Fatal South L.A. Hit-and-Run; Suspect Remains At Large

Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division on Tuesday released footage of a fatal hit-and-run in Vermont Square in hopes that the public may be able to identify the driver. The incident occurred on Oct. 16, 2022, at around 3 p.m. near the intersection of 54th and Cimarron streets, officials said. Surveillance footage shows the victim, described as a man in his 20s, riding a motorcycle eastbound on 54th Street behind a dark-colored sedan that was traveling in the same direction. In the footage, the driver of the sedan can be seen making an unsafe turn causing the victim to slam into the driver’s side rear of the vehicle and strike the pavement. The sedan can be seen in the video slowing down after the impact, but the driver failed to stop and render aid to the victim before fleeing the scene westbound on 54th Street with damage to the rear of the vehicle where the collision occurred. Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and took the victim to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

WATCH: Dad Fights Off Burglar In His LA Backyard

How many times have you heard "a mother will always fight off anybody to keep her children safe?" You could say the same about this dad after he was caught on camera fighting off a burglar in his own backyard. Security video shows the scary confrontation as it all went down last Thursday. It happened during the burglar's second visit to Danny Lobell's backyard as he returned to the scene of the crime hours later to wipe off his fingerprints. "I look up, and there's the guy. All of a sudden, something… an animal instinct inside of me that's in my DNA as a father, kicked in," said homeowner and father Danny Lobell. "I said, ‘my back door is open and my little girls are in there. If one of us is going back in there, it’s not going to be that guy.’” Lobell uses the bus in his backyard as a studio for his comedy podcast. That's when the burglar first strikes, stealing cameras and other electronic gear worth around $25,000. But just two hours later, the burglar is back to wipe clean his fingerprints.

Man Reported Missing From Westchester Area

Authorities sought the public's help Tuesday to find a man who went missing a week ago in the Westchester area. Colm Michael Croghan, 48, was last seen near Los Angeles International Airport on May 2, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported. Croghan is white, 6-feet-2 inches tall, weighs 245 pounds and has blond hair and blue eyes. He has a large scar across the back of his head. "His loved ones are concerned for his well-being and asking for your help," the sheriff's department said. Anyone with information on his whereabouts was urged to call the sheriff's Missing Persons Unit at 323-890-5500, or Crime Stoppers at 800-222- TIPS. Sheriff’s Dept. Program To Track Presence Of Flesh-Eating Street Drug In Los Angeles

Amid troubling signs that a dangerous sedative known as “tranq” has spread even further into the local street drug supply, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has launched a pilot program to better document the drug’s presence. Xylazine is an animal tranquilizer that began appearing several years ago in illicit pills and powders on the East Coast. It’s been linked to deaths across the country and can cause human tissue to rot, leaving users with grisly wounds that sometimes lead to amputations. In early March, county health officials initially said they weren’t sure whether the deadly adulterant had begun appearing on the streets of Los Angeles. Weeks later, the Times learned that the Sheriff’s Department crime lab had been detecting signs of xylazine in drug samples for at least four years — but they’d never told the health department or the public. At the time, department officials said that was because, despite its harms, xylazine is not illegal, so formally tracking it was beyond the scope of their work.

13 Arrested In Southern California In Connection With Fentanyl-Laced Drugs That Led To Fatal Overdoses

Thirteen people suspected of selling fentanyl-laced drugs that caused at least a dozen fatal overdoses in Southern California have been arrested, federal authorities said Tuesday. One of the men arrested, Dominick Kingdiamond Alvarado, 22, of Tarzana, is suspected of selling fake Percocet pills tainted with fentanyl to teenagers at a Santa Clarita shopping mall, causing the overdose deaths of a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, prosecutors said. Another man arrested, Heriberto Galvan 24, of North Hollywood, is suspected of selling fentanyl to a 19-year-old man from La Cañada Flintridge who was found dead in his car the next day, they said. Martin Estrada, the U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, announced the arrests of Alvarado, Galvan and 11 others at a Los Angeles news conference with regional directors of the Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI, along with local law enforcement brass. “The cases announced today charge drug dealers who have caused the death or injury of others and thereby prioritized greed over human life,” Estrada said.

Rookie Louisville Officer Who Was Shot In The Head Making ‘Remarkable' Progress

Injured Louisville police officer Nickolas Wilt is continuing to make a “remarkable” recovery after he was shot in the head during the Old National Bank mass shooting last month, according to a Facebook post from the Louisville Metro Police Foundation. Wilt was taken off all life-sustaining medical equipment, the foundation said. He has also shown neurological improvement and is able to follow some commands. Wilt had previously been taken off a ventilator. The foundation said Wilt is still dealing with pneumonia and infections. He went to University of Louisville Health Jewish Hospital to treat the pneumonia and returned back to the UofL Hospital approximately two weeks later. The bullet that struck Wilt remains in his head, according to a Facebook post from the Louisville Metro Police Department. Doctors determined that the bullet is in a crucial area but does not pose a threat to his brain or blood vessels, and the damage from the injury is minimal. Wilt is entering the “long haul” process of his recovery, the foundations aid. “We are proud to report that doctors are now talking about getting Officer Wilt into neuro rehab within the next week, which is a significant milestone in his recovery process,” the foundation said in the Facebook post.

FBI Releases Report On LE Line Of Duty Deaths In 2022

The FBI has released its report on the number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in 2022, noting a decrease of nearly 18% in felonious deaths when compared to 2021. A total of 118 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents. Of these, 60 officers died as a result of felonious acts, and 58 officers died in accidents. Sixty felonious deaths occurred in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Fifty-eight officers were killed accidentally while performing their duties in 2022, an increase of two when compared with the 56 officers accidentally killed in 2021. Firearms were used to kill 49 of the 60 law enforcement officers. Eight were killed by the assailant's hands and three were killed by vehicles. The average age of officers in this data was 39 years old, and the average time on the job at the time of the fatal incident was seven years. Twelve officers were killed in ambushes (premeditated) and 12 were killed during investigations/enforcement activities, making these the leading circumstances in deadly incidents for 2022. Six officers each were killed in unprovoked attacks, disorders/disturbances and tactical situations. Four each were killed in encounters with emotionally disturbed persons and pursuits. Three each were killed responding to crimes in progress and assisting other officers.

LA City Council OKs $2M For Park Under Sixth Street Viaduct

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a $2 million allocation Tuesday for the construction of the Sixth Street Park, Arts and River Connectivity project, with construction scheduled to begin in the summer. The project will include a 12-acre park connecting the communities of Boyle Heights and the Arts District, which have historically lacked access to quality parks and open space, according to Councilman Kevin de León, who presented the motion seeking funds for the project. “Park equity is not just a matter of convenience, it's a matter of social justice,” de León said in a statement. “All communities, regardless of their ZIP code, deserve access to quality parks and opens spaces.” The 12-acre park will be located under the Sixth Street Viaduct. The project will include soccer fields, a walking path, two dog parks, a skate park, a performing arts plaza and a large playground. The Sixth Street PARC project is intended to provide a safe and accessible space for community members to enjoy outdoor activities.

Councilwoman Seeks To Safeguard Relocation Benefits For Barrington Tenants

Following Monday’s announcement that the owners of Barrington Plaza Apartments will remove all units from the rental market for a sprinkler retrofit — and force current tenants to relocate — City Councilwoman Traci Park filed a motion Tuesday seeking to provide tenants relocation benefits and, if possible, the right to return. “I am deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Barrington Plaza Apartments tenants during this critical time,” Park, whose district includes the apartment complex, said in a statement. “I am working closely with the mayor’s team and our housing department to ensure that each resident is protected and the letter of the law is followed.” The Barrington apartments have been the scene of two fires over the past decade, including one that killed a 19-year-old foreign exchange student. Hundreds of people will be forced to vacate the complex by September.
