Erica McAdoo, a senior detention officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, has died from complications related to the coronavirus, the department said Saturday.

McAdoo died Friday, the department announced “with extreme sadness.”

She is believed to be the first LAPD officer to die from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

LAPD officials said there are 287 department employees who are currently at home after having been exposed to, or having tested positive for, COVID-19.

Earlier this week, LAPD said 128 of its employees recovered from the disease and have returned to work.

A supervisor with the LAPD Custody Services Division declined to immediately answer questions on how McAdoo contracted COVID-19 and whether she contracted the disease while on the job.

LAPD runs 10 jails located throughout Los Angeles, though only five are fully operational.
