70 Missing Children, Including Sex Trafficking Victims, Found In Texas Operation
U.S. authorities said 70 missing children, ranging in ages from 10 to 17, were recently found after a three-week-long operation based in Texas. Many of the kids, who included victims of sex trafficking and physical and sexual abuse, were located in West Texas, according to authorities. Some were also found in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as in Colorado and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which operates under Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced the multi-agency operation, called "Operation Lost Souls." The operation ran from the end of April through mid-May, centered in El Paso, Midland, Ector and Tom Green counties of Texas. Local police departments, school districts and public safety offices were among the agencies listed as part of the operation. Officials held a press conference to discuss the results on May 25, which coincided with National Missing Children’s Day. Law enforcement officials provided victim services and counseling to the children and their families, HSI said. Many of the children had been runaways, authorities added.

After Mass Shooting, NYC Explores Gun Detectors In Subways
In the aftermath of a mass shooting on a New York City subway train, the mayor floated a high-tech idea: deploy scanners that can spot someone carrying a gun into the transit system before they have a chance to use it. The technology to scan large numbers of people quickly for weapons does exist, and is used now to screen people at places like sports stadiums and theme parks. But security experts say installing such a system in the city's sprawling, porous subway system in a way that would make a difference would be difficult, if not impossible. The problem wouldn't necessarily be the technology — but rather the reality that scanners need to be accompanied by human operators to confront people carrying firearms illegally. “Logistically, it would be a nightmare. You’re going to have to tie up a lot of officers doing this,” said James Dooley, a retired New York Police Department captain who served in the department's transit division. “We have hundreds of stations, and the fact of the matter is that putting someone at every entrance to every station is logistically impossible.”

Guns Overtake Cars As Leading Cause Of Death For U.S. Youth. ‘I Just Didn’t Think It Would Occur So Quickly’
For decades, the biggest threat kids faced growing up came from the automobiles they happily hopped into every day for a trip to school, the store or soccer practice. Now, it’s gunfire. As the country mourns its latest school shooting victims in Uvalde, Texas, it also has reached a grim milestone: Guns now kill more kids and teens in the U.S. than auto accidents do. The trend has been building in recent years as automobile deaths have fallen with improved safety measures, while gun violence among the young has taken a growing toll. Figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that in 2020, the most recent year available, firearms passed motor vehicles as the leading killer of those ages 1-19. “It was clear to me that it was just a matter of time,” said Dr. Lois Lee, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Boston Children’s Hospital and an associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School who has been studying the trend. “I just didn’t think it would occur so quickly.” What’s spurred the violence? Experts point to many causes — the frustrations of entrenched poverty and discrimination, glorification of gun violence in popular culture and entertainment, and too-easy youth access to guns in many states like Texas — all kicked into overdrive by the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another 2,100 COVID Cases In LA County; 4 New Deaths
Another 2,151 COVID-19 cases were reported by Los Angeles County Tuesday, along with four additional deaths. The number of COVID-positive patients in county hospitals dipped slightly to 479, down from 486 on Monday. The number of those patients being treated in intensive care was 54 as of Tuesday, up two from the previous day. The new cases reported Tuesday lifted the county’s overall total from throughout the pandemic to 2,976,323. The four new deaths gave the county a cumulative virus-related death toll of 32,133. Health officials said the numbers announced Tuesday are likely artificially low due to reporting delays from the holiday weekend. The average daily rate of people testing positive for the virus was 4% as of Tuesday. The Department of Public Health noted that the rate is more than double what it was a month ago, when it was 1.8%.

Gas Appliances Would Be Banned In New Homes Under Ordinance Considered By LA City Council
The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to have multiple city departments develop a plan for the implementation of a proposed ordinance that would require all new construction of buildings in Los Angeles to be zero-carbon. Buildings in Los Angeles account for 43% of the city's greenhouse gas emissions, more than any other sector, according to Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who is leading the effort. Under her proposal, new zero-emission construction would not allow gas lines, with heating systems and other appliances instead being by operated by electricity. Appliances in the buildings would also have to be energy efficient. Once Los Angeles transitions to 100% renewable energy -- which the city aims to achieve by 2035 -- the buildings would operate on the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's carbon-neutral grid. The motion was introduced by Raman with Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmen Mitch O'Farrell, Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Paul Koretz.
