Four L.A. City Council members lead their opponents, while a fifth faces a runoff
Four members of the Los Angeles City Council were leading in their contests for reelection Tuesday, while a fifth was looking at a Nov. 8 runoff, according to partial returns. Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield and Monica Rodriguez, who represent opposite ends of the San Fernando Valley, defeated their challengers by wide margins, those returns showed. Councilman Curren Price, based in South Los Angeles, prevailed over his lone opponent on the ballot, college administrator Dulce Vasquez. Price called the race a referendum on his “progressive, positive, inclusive leadership.”

Incumbent Alex Villanueva bound for runoff in bid to remain LA County sheriff
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva's bid for a second term will move to a November runoff election against former Long Beach police Chief Robert Luna, with the pair jumping to distant leads Tuesday night, according to early ballot results. Early returns showed Villanueva leading the nine-person field with 34% of the vote, while Luna collected 25%. Sheriff's Lt. Eric Strong was a distant third with 12.8% of the vote.

Rob Bonta leads in Attorney General race and could face Nathan Hochman in general election, according to AP
Democrat Rob Bonta holds the lead in early returns in the attorney general primary election and could face Republican Nathan Hochman, the candidate endorsed by the GOP, in the November general election, according to the Associated Press. Bonta had an early lead with about 57% of the votes after the polls closed and Hochman trailed him at just above 17%.

Man shot dead in Atwater Village, suspect at large
A man was shot to death in Atwater Village on Tuesday night, according to authorities. Officers were called around 7:50 p.m. to the area of Chevy Chase Drive and Brunswick Avenue, where they found one person with a gunshot wound, said Officer Jeff Lee, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson.

Burglary suspects drive car into Melrose storefront
Authorities were investigating a possible burglary on Melrose Avenue early Wednesday morning. Los Angeles Police Department officers were dispatched to Melrose and Fairfax Avenues at around 4 a.m. after reports that a vehicle drove into a storefront. Though they were able to take one possible suspect into custody, two other people were seen running from the area on foot.

Gunman fires several shots at vehicle on 101 Freeway in Studio City area
California Highway Patrol is searching for a gunman who opened fire on another driver on the 101 Freeway in the Studio City area early Tuesday morning. The car-to-car shooting happened just before 5 a.m. near on the southbound lanes of the freeway, south of Lankershim Boulevard, according to CHP. The victim, who did not wish to be identified, said a gunman driving a dark-colored vehicle had been following the victim from the 170 Freeway.

Biden in L.A.: Road closures, schedule as president hosts Summit of the Americas
President Joe Biden is coming to Los Angeles Wednesday for day three of the Summit of the Americas, which means increased traffic and road closures for Angelenos. Biden will depart Joint Base Andrews in Maryland at 8:45 a.m., arriving at LAX in Air Force One around 1:30 p.m., according to a release from the White House. The president will make stops in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles, where barricades have been up for several days near Crypto.com Arena and L.A. Live.

LASD searching for suspect wanted in connection with carjacking, shooting in Santa Clarita
Authorities are searching for two suspects involved in a shooting turned carjacking in Santa Clarita Tuesday evening. The shooting occurred at around 5:40 p.m. at the Chevron Gas Station near the Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies detailed that they were dispatched to the scene after reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. When they arrived they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Members of Inmate Firefighting Crew Suffer Burns in Northern LA County
Six members of an inmate firefighting crew were injured in a remote area of northern Los Angeles County. One inmate was treated for critical injuries at a burn center with burns covering over 12% of his body, but officials say he is expected to be ok. The other five inmates suffered minor injuries. The inmate firefighters were in the back of a transport vehicle leaving a training exercise when the fire started, authorities say.

Former LADWP executive David Alexander sentenced to 4 years in prison in bribery scheme
The former cyber security chief for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power was sentenced Tuesday to four years in prison for his role in a bribery scheme. David Alexander, 54, admitted to lying to the FBI about his role in the botched launch of an LADWP computerized billing system. The failed system led to many customers receiving wildly inflated bills.

Megachurch Leader Faces Sentencing Wednesday in Sex Case
The leader of a Mexico-based evangelical megachurch is due in a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday to face sentencing following a deal with prosecutors last week in which he agreed to plead guilty to three sex counts involving minors. Naason Joaquin Garcia, 53, faces more than 16 years in state prison and lifetime sex offender registration in connection with his guilty plea last Friday to two counts of forcible oral copulation involving minors and one count of a lewd act upon a child who was 15 years old, according to the California Attorney General’s Office.

Daughter of slain NYPD officer struggles to access mom’s pension
Genesis Villella was forced to drop out of school to take care of her younger siblings after her mother, an NYPD officer, was fatally shot in 2017. Since then, Villella says she’s been engaged in a five-year financial battle over her slain mother’s pension, according to the New York Post.
The issue lies in a legal loophole, the report says. Children of single-parent cops who die in the line of duty aren’t entitled to their parent’s pension for life, unlike spouses and parents of fallen officers, according to the Post.

California man with weapon, burglary tools detained near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s Maryland home
A California man carrying at least one weapon and burglary tools was detained Wednesday by Maryland law enforcement near Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home in Montgomery County, according to a Washington Post report that cited people familiar with the investigation. The man, described as being in his mid-20s, told law enforcement he wanted to kill Kavanaugh, 57, because he was angry over a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion overturning Roe vs. Wade, which ensures a person’s right to an abortion, according to people familiar with the investigation speaking to the Washington Post on the condition of anonymity.
