One Dead After Fight Turns Into Stabbing In South Los Angeles
Authorities are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred in South Los Angeles early Thursday morning. According to Los Angeles Police Department, the incident occurred a little after 1 a.m. when two men became involved in some sort of dispute in a parking lot on S. Broadway. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as 33-year-old Long Beach resident Ross Lane. Witnesses told investigators that the incident stemmed from a dispute between the two parties, who allegedly knew each other. They learned that the suspect and victim did not live at the location, but were instead there visiting someone. Detectives believe that they know the identity of the suspect, but have not disclosed any further information.

Driver Found Fatally Shot In Chesterfield Square Neighborhood
An investigation is underway after a man was found fatally shot in the Chesterfield Square neighborhood of Los Angeles Friday. The gunshots were reported around 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of West 69th Street and South Western Avenue, a Los Angles Police Department spokesperson confirmed. In the driver’s seat of the vehicle, responding officers found an unresponsive man who was suffering from a gunshot wound. The unidentified man, believed to be about 30 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators did not provide a description of any suspect or suspects.

23-Year-Old Arrested For Allegedly Driving Through South LA Carnival
A 23-year-old is in custody facing felony hit-and-run charges after allegedly driving a car through a carnival in South Los Angeles Saturday night, but officials said the incident could have been much worse. Steven Weems was trying to evade police officers after they tried to pull him over near East 36th and Trinity streets, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers said they tried to get out of their car and approach Weems, that's when he took off, eventually plowing right through the carnival. All told, seven people were injured, and at least six of them were transported to local hospitals with "non-life-threatening injuries." Witnesses said Weems drove through a barricade on Trinity Street, hit at least one of the amusement rides, and destroyed other property like a pop-up tent belonging to Laura Zazueta, who was selling products at the carnival. Zazueta said she lost so much product to damage that she has started a GoFundMe campaign.

Barricaded Suspect In Hollywood Apartment Found Dead After Standoff Sparked By Eviction Notice
A barricaded suspect was found dead from what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with law enforcement in Hollywood that prompted an hourslong closure of the 101 Freeway on Thursday. Authorities say deputies were serving an eviction notice at 2330 Cahuenga Boulevard around 7 a.m. when they heard a gunshot inside the apartment. Deputies backed away, and a SWAT team rushed to the scene. Crisis negotiators attempted to make contact with the barricaded suspect. The situation forced law enforcement officials to shut down the 101 Freeway in both directions for hours. Authorities were concerned about possible gunshots coming from the apartment's balcony. AIR7 HD was over the scene as authorities sent a drone up to the window of the unit where the individual was believed to holed up.

Man Seen Stealing Work Truck On Live TV Was Felon On Parole For Similar Crimes
The man behind the madness that included multiple alleged car break-ins, a carjacking caught on live TV and a lengthy police chase stretching across parts of Los Angeles and Orange Counties has been identified Thursday. It all started from a traffic stop in Fullerton Wednesday evening. After the suspect, 32-year-old Johnny Anchondo, refused to pull over, a police chase ensued. Anchondo then allegedly stole a white van and when he got cornered by officers in an apartment complex parking lot in Orange County, he backed into one of the cop cars behind him and took off. After extending the chase to Whittier in LA County, he ditched the van and ran off on foot. Anchondo then broke into a nearby home and – on live television – he stole a family's work truck and took off from the driveway, once again extending the crime spree and the police chase. The violent carjacking left the pickup truck owner's mother with a hand injury.

Burglars Steal French Bulldog From West Hills Home
Burglars were caught on camera stealing a French Bulldog from a home in West Hills. It happened Wednesday around noon at a home on the 23000 block of Haynes St. The homeowner told FOX 11 that two suspect broke into their house and stole Cardi, a French Bulldog, along with some jewelry. The thieves apparently took a ladder and climbed up to the porch; no one was home at the time of the incident. The French bulldog was named Los Angeles' most popular dog breed in 2021 by the American Kennel Club and the theft of Frenchies has been on the rise across the area. Most notably was the theft of two of Lady Gaga's three Frenchies.

Police Search For 11-Year-Old South Gate Girl Who Disappeared Walking Home From School
Police are searching for a missing 11-year-old girl who disappeared while walking home in South Gate. The girl, Edelyne Mariah Madrigal, 11, was last seen on Sept. 27 while walking home from a South Gate school. She attended an after-school program, but when her mother went to pick her up around 5:15 p.m., she was nowhere to be found. Her family has not heard from her since that day and says she does not have a cell phone. “I just want her home,” Carol Miranda, Edelyne’s mother, tearfully tells KTLA. “I don’t know if someone’s feeding her. She’s just a kid.” Edelyne is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, according to South Gate Police. She was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt and blue jeans with black sneakers. Southern California Man Admits To Role In Jan. 6 Insurrection
A Southern California man pleaded guilty Tuesday, Nov. 8 to a federal misdemeanor charge for participating in the Jan. 6 insurrection, according to court records. Derek Sulenta, who was arrested in Long Beach on Aug. 4, pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating or picketing in the Capitol Building. Sulenta faces a maximum of six months in prison and up to a $5,000 fine when he’s sentenced. He will also be ordered to pay $500 in restitution to the Architect of the Capitol, a federal agency that maintains the building, to help cover damage caused by Jan. 6 rioters, court records indicated. Sulenta traveled to Washington D.C. from Los Angeles and entered the Capitol around 2 p.m. Jan. 6, 2021, according to a sworn affidavit from an FBI agent. A relative tipped off authorities after Facebook posts located him at the Capitol during the attack, which aimed to forestall certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Final Suspect In Fatal SoCal House Party Shooting Turns Himself In At U.S.-Mexico Border
A third suspect wanted in connection with a deadly shooting at a Halloween weekend house party in Covina turned himself in to authorities at the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday, leaving no other suspects at large. Joel Daniel Garcia, 19, surrendered around 11:35 a.m. to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Otay Mesa in San Diego, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Two other suspects, 18-year-old Adrian Joseph Robles and 19-year-old Brian Thomas Ramos, turned themselves in Saturday, deputies said. The shooting Oct. 30 left two men dead and two others wounded. Deputies responding to a call around 12:24 a.m. in the 17000 block of East Bellbrook Avenue found four men with gunshot wounds. There was a party at the residence, and one of the people there took out a gun and opened fire before fleeing, homicide investigators found. One victim died at the scene and three others were transported to a local hospital, where one died. Further information on the investigation was not available Thursday night.

Pennsylvania Trooper Arrests Teen Who Was Driving Erratically, Links Him To Murder In Ohio
The Pennsylvania State trooper quickly noticed the erratic driving of the person behind the wheel of the Honda Odyssey, from the screeching brakes on Interstate 80 to the weaving across lanes. Within minutes, the driver, a 14-year-old boy, was arrested and linked to a death more than an hour away in Euclid, where Larry Lee Anderson was found slain in his bed. The boy was charged with murder Tuesday in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court in the death of Anderson, 71. The youth is accused of breaking into Anderson’s home, 424 E. 254th St., and shooting him in the face, according to court records. The documents allege the youth stole a handgun, some money and Anderson’s Honda. He also is charged with robbery, theft, trespassing, burglary, assault and having a weapon in a car. It is unclear whether the handgun stolen from Anderson was the weapon used to shoot him. Authorities have not released why the youth targeted Anderson. The boy, who is from Columbus, was stopped by a trooper of the Pennsylvania State Police while driving Anderson’s minivan about 9 a.m. Saturday.

Teen Brutally Kills Family Member, Attacks Another At Florida Home, Deputies Say
Deputies arrested a 19-year-old accused of brutally killing one of his family members and attacking another at a Palm Coast home early Wednesday morning, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Law enforcement responded to the home on Clermont Court shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller said a man showed up at her home saying he had been attacked and needed help. Deputies spoke to the victim who said he had been attacked by a family member later identified as Luke Ingram, of Dunwoody, Georgia. The victim said he believed Ingram had also attacked another family member within the home. At the home, investigators found Ingram standing next to a severely injured man and a blunt object that appeared to be used in the attack, the sheriff's office said. Fire and rescue arrived and pronounced the man dead from significant blunt force trauma.

LAFD Mourns Loss Of Firefighter Who Died At Home
The Los Angeles Fire Department is mourning one of their own after a firefighter passed away. Kenneth Brink passed away at him home on Nov. 9. His cause of the death was not revealed. Brink was a 15-year veteran of LAFD and worked at Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks with the Urban Search and Rescue Task Force and LAFD's Swiftwater Rescue Team. "This is a tremendous loss and will be felt across our entire department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, family, friends, and fellow firefighters. Rest in peace, Firefighter Brink," the fire department said.

5 Hospitalized In Unknown Condition After Possible Overdose In Granada Hills, LAFD Says
Five people were rushed to a hospital Saturday morning after suffering possible drug overdoses at an apartment building in Granada Hills, officials said. Firefighters-paramedics were dispatched about 8 a.m. to the 16900 block of West Blackhawk Street, said Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. They arrived to find five patients in need of medical assistance. The individuals were a 26-year-old woman, two 30-year-old women, a 30 year-old man and a 40-year-old man, Prange said. Their conditions were not immediately known. Police say the five individuals claimed they took cocaine.

Fire Damages Boarded-Up House In Westlake
A fire damaged a boarded-up house in the Westlake area Thursday, but no one was hurt. Firefighters sent to the 700 block of South Hartford Avenue at 6:44 a.m. extinguished the flames on the second floor of the two-story building in 18 minutes, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Four people were found inside the house, the fire department reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

COVID Infections, Hospitalizations Continue Upswing In LA County
Los Angeles County is continuing to experience increases in COVID-19 infection and hospitalization rates and the public health director is warning that two newly emerging variants of the virus are threatening to fuel a fall and winter surge in cases. Barbara Ferrer said Thursday the county had an average of about 1,300 new COVID cases per day last week, up from about 1,000 per day the previous week. She said the daily average case numbers have been “slowly but steadily increasing” since the beginning of November. The rate of infections is also rising, reaching a weekly average of 86 cases per 100,000 residents last week, up from 65 per 100,000 residents two weeks ago, Ferrer said. If that average rises to 100 cases per 100,000 residents per week, the county will again “strongly recommend” that people wear masks indoors. Indoor mask wearing is currently only a matter of personal preference, unless an individual location or business opts to require them.

COVID, Monkeypox Cases Spike, LA Council Extends Local Emergencies
The Los Angeles City Council Wednesday voted to extend separate declarations of local emergencies for COVID-19 and monkeypox. The council also voted to continue allowing remote meetings under Assembly Bill 361, which allows meetings to take place virtually due to the risk of COVID-19. Councilmen John Lee and Joe Buscaino voted against continuing the state of emergency for COVID-19. Buscaino voted against continuing remote meetings. On Wednesday, the number of COVID-positive patients in L.A. County hospitals increased by 52 people to 492, according to the latest state figures - - continuing a recent uptick that has health officials concerned about another possible cold-weather surge in transmission. As of Tuesday, there were 1,433 new COVID-19 infections reported in the county, along with eight additional virus-related deaths. The seven-day average daily rate of people testing positive for the virus rose slightly, reaching 5.9% as of Tuesday.

Traci Park Maintains Lead In LA Council's 11th District Seat
Traci Park is maintaining her lead over Erin Darling, according to the latest results from the county clerk's office. She remains ahead of Darling, 55% to 45%. Park will replace City Councilman Mike Bonin in the 11th District, if elected. The 11th District stretches along the Westside of the city along the Pacific Ocean. Bonin decided not to run for a third term, but his legacy looms large in this race. One of the more progressive members of the council, Bonin was one of two dissenters on adjusting the 41.18 ordinance that made it illegal for encampments to be within 500 feet of schools and daycare centers. Park has talked about the division created by Bonin in many neighborhoods across CD11 and said it is her mission to make the community feel heard. "As a resident of Venice, like many others on the Westside, I have seen the catastrophic effects of failed policies in our communities," Park told the Current.

LA Council President Krekorian To Chair Committee On Governance Reform
City Council President Paul Krekorian will chair the newly formed Ad Hoc Committee on City Governance Reform, he announced Thursday. The committee was approved by the council two weeks ago in response to the City Hall racism scandal and is intended to implement reforms that will increase transparency, limit corruption and ensure city leadership is representative of communities. Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who presented the motion for the committee, will serve as vice chair. The other members are council members Bob Blumenfield, Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Heather Hutt. “We’re at a turning point in the history of this city,” Krekorian said. “In the wake of recent violations of the public’s trust and failures to meet the standards of integrity the people deserve of their elected officials, we can no longer accept business as usual. The people of Los Angeles are calling out for fundamental reform and we intend to deliver it.”
