LAPD Serves Warrants For Reddit Accounts In City Hall Leaked Audio Investigation: Report
The Los Angeles Police Department has served search warrants in its investigation into the leaked conversation that led to the City Hall racism scandal, to determine if the conversation was recorded illegally, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. The Times, citing sources who spoke anonymously because of the ongoing investigation, reported that the warrants were for several social media accounts, including the Reddit account on which the audio was originally posted. No specific targets were identified. More warrants are expected to be served during the investigation, the sources told The Times. The warrants — seeking communications over the last few weeks — were served by the LAPD's Major Crimes Division, which opened the investigation last month. Police Chief Michel Moore said last month that the Major Crimes Division launched the investigation at the request of "individuals that were present at that meeting," which included former Council President Nury Martinez, former President of the L.A. County Federation of Labor Ron Herrera and Council members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo. A spokesperson for de León later said the council member did not request an investigation.

California PD Launches Crime-Mapping Tool To Create Transparency, Prevent Crime
In an effort to increase transparency and awareness in the community, the Oceanside (Calif.) Police Department launched a crime-mapping tool to help prevent crime and reduce fear. The department is using FirstWatch, which shows calls for service over the previous 12 to 48 hours, Fox5SanDiego.com reported. “It activates the community as a whole to be vigilant and to take care of not only themselves but their neighbors,” Oceanside PD Cpt. Sean Marchand said. The map also informs community members about what kind of incident is taking place. The technology was funded by the half-cent Measure X sales tax revenue, an initiative passed in 2018 to enhance public safety, according to the report. For officers’ safety, incidents do not populate on the map until they have left the scene and confidential information is not included.

LA City Council Approves Phase-Out Of Oil Drilling, Ban On New Wells
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously today to phase out oil drilling in the city, approving an ordinance that bans new oil and gas extraction. The council voted 12-0 for the ordinance, which amends the municipal code to make existing extraction activities a nonconforming use in all zones. “This may be the most important step towards environmental justice that this council has taken in recent memory,'' Council President Paul Krekorian said. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a similar ordinance in October. The City Council in January unanimously approved a series of recommendations aimed at banning new oil and gas wells. The city ordinance phases out all such oil and gas extraction activities by banning new oil and gas extraction and ceasing existing operations within 20 years. Operators would not be able to expand their existing sites or extend the life of a well during the 20-year phase-out period. Many community groups have lobbied Los Angeles to stop oil drilling, citing the harm it has on communities that is disproportionately felt inworking-class communities and communities of color. More than 500,000 Los Angeles County residents live within a half-mile of an active oil well.
