Shooting At Trader Joe’s Parking Lot Leaves 1 Dead, 3 Wounded

One person was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of a Trader Joe’s store in the San Fernando Valley, police said. The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Fallbrook Center, a retail complex that is also home to a Target, Home Depot and Walmart. Los Angeles police were investigating whether there was a gun battle at the scene, said Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department. “There is a possibility we had parties firing at each other,” he said. As officers descended on the scene, a suspect fled in a car and was spotted by a police helicopter, Hamilton said. Officers in the helicopter saw the alleged suspect switch vehicles and directed police cars to the area to block an escape. At some point there was a hit-and-run with another motorist and a person was treated for injuries, Hamilton said. The suspect was detained following a short pursuit and was taken into custody without incident at Owensmouth Avenue and Saticoy Street, Hamilton said. Investigators found two firearms and are working to determine if at least one of the injured was also involved in the shooting, Hamilton said.

Driver Charged In Windsor Hills Crash That Killed 6 Claims To Have Had A Seizure Behind Wheel

Lawyers for the nurse accused of killing six people in a fiery crash in Windsor Hills last year say she suffered a seizure behind the wheel and froze while driving. Lawyers for Nicole Linton say they plan to have a neurologist who specializes in seizures testify on Linton's behalf. Police say Linton was driving more than 100 mph when she drove through a red light and hit multiple cars last year. She's been charged with six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. ABC7's sister station ABC13 in Houston, the city Linton had been visiting from, is reporting that prosecutors allege that emergency room doctors who treated Linton in the immediate aftermath of the crash did not report any signs of a seizure or impairment that would indicate a loss of consciousness. She is currently being held without bail.

The victim of a traumatizing robbery at gunpoint is speaking out, desperately hoping that the thieves return his beloved French Bulldog they took on Wednesday in Canoga Park. "I am pretty traumatized from that, I'm always looking behind my back now, especially around this area where I thought it was safe," said the victim, only wishing to be called "Johnny" out of concern for his personal safety. "We've never had something like that, like this close. So we're all scared." Johnny was walking his 7-month-old French Bulldog named Ulan in front of Columbus Middle School at around 10 a.m. on Wednesday when a red sedan pulled up next to him. Two men jumped out of the car, demanding that he hand over his dog while they held him at gunpoint. "He was pointing it at my stomach at first, and then I kind of pushed him back and then he moved it to the right and he shot right beside me," Johnny said. "It was really loud, but I assumed it was fake."

2,000 Kilograms Of Illegal Drugs Seized From ‘One Of The Largest Labs’ In SoCal, FBI Says

The FBI executed four search warrants on suspected drug labs in Southern California this week, including busting one location in Orange County that was “one of the largest labs” federal agents have ever seen in the region, according to authorities. Federal agents discovered more than 2,000 kilograms of “pill product” at the drug lab in Garden Grove that could be made into illegal drugs, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Los Angeles field office. They also found what they believe to be counterfeit Xanax pills, methamphetamine and bath salts, she said. Eimiller said that the DEA agents and experts said it was “one of the largest labs they’ve ever seen.” No arrests were made Tuesday, though it was not immediately clear whether there were people inside of the labs that the FBI raided.

Calif. U.S. Attorney: Drug Trafficker Pleads Guilty To Identity Theft, Attempting To Steal Seized Cars From FBI Using Fake Court Documents

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, Phillip A. Talbert, issued the following news release on March 28, 2023: Quinten Giovanni Moody, aka Christano Rossi, 38, of Dublin, pleaded guilty today to conspiracy to distribute marijuana, aggravated identity theft, and obstruction of justice, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. According to court documents, between June 2017 and June 2022, Moody, co-defendant Myra Boleche Minks, 44, formerly of Roseville, and other co conspirators generated hundreds of thousands of dollars by transporting marijuana from California to Georgia, Nevada, Texas, and other locations. Moody and others bought marijuana in California and then transported the marijuana to distributors in other states via couriers and baggage traveling on commercial airplanes and commercial shipping services. Once the marijuana was sold, Moody and others caused the proceeds of the marijuana sales to be returned to them in California by using couriers to travel on commercial airline flights carrying cash, using shipping services to ship cash, and causing others at their direction to deposit cash into bank accounts.

'We're Not Babysitters': Alabama Police Chief Speaks Out On Teen's Death, 8 Other Homicides In 9 Days

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond pulled no punches when discussing the early-morning shooting death of a 16-year-old high school student, or the deaths of eight other people killed over the past nine days. The killings are devastating to those who knew and loved the victims, the chief said, but many of them happened because of the victims’ actions and could have been prevented. “So, we need to have a really candid conversation about the things that are transpiring in our city as it relates to homicides and violence,’’ Thurmond said. The chief began with the shooting death of 16-year-old Jada Mahogany White, a student at Jackson-Olin High School. Jada was killed just before 2:30 a.m. while she and several other juveniles were out drinking and riding around Ensley and damaging someone else’s vehicle. “At 2:24 in the morning, I don’t know what a 16-year-old was doing out with three other juveniles, all of which had been drinking alcohol. They’re damaging a vehicle and they subsequently get shot at,’’ Thurmond said.

Watch: LAFD Hoists Man Stranded In LA River Channel To Safety

A team of Los Angeles Fire Department rescuers hoisted a man to safety after he was stranded in the Los Angeles River channel in Boyle Heights. The man was on a concrete channel divider under the Sixth Street Bridge with water rushing around it. A rescuer was lowered from a LAFD helicopter hovering near high-tension lines. Both were then hoisted to the helicopter in a harness. Water was moving at about 5 mph in the channel after two days of rain in Los Angeles. The concrete channel's surface is often slippery, so even just a few inches of water can leave someone stranded. It was not immediately clear why the man was in the channel east of downtown LA.

Mark Ridley-Thomas' Seat Now Vacant, Council President Wants To Appoint Heather Hutt

Heather Hutt, who has been filling the District 10 City Council seat on a temporary basis, is -- for the short term, at least -- its "caretaker" following the conviction of now-former Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas on federal corruption charges. But that caretaker title figures to change in about two weeks following City Council President Paul Krekorian's announcement Thursday night that he wants the council, at its next meeting, to appoint Hutt to fill out the remainder of Ridley-Thomas' unexpired term, which runs until December 2024. Krekorian's plan -- in which he formally declared the seat vacant -- emerged Thursday evening, hours after a federal jury in downtown Los Angeles convicted Ridley-Thomas of bribery and conspiracy charges, along with mail and wire fraud, stemming from his time on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors. The charges stem from what prosecutors called a quid pro quo arrangement between Ridley-Thomas and a former head of the USC School of Social Work, with the politician accused of steering county contracts toward the school in exchange for benefits to Ridley-Thomas' son, former Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas.
