Father Of 3, Beloved Community Member Gunned Down At Wilmington Youth Event

An investigation continues and a family is devastated after a beloved father of three who loved to cook for his community was gunned down in the Wilmington area in Los Angeles County. An official with the Los Angeles Police Department said the shooting happened around 10:10 p.m. Thursday outside the Wilmington Recreation Center. A "Summer Night Lights" event for kids was underway when gunshots rang out near West D Street and Bay View Avenue. LAPD officials said some volunteers walked over to the sidewalk when they were approached by two people who fired multiple rounds. Following the shooting, the suspects left the scene in an unknown direction. On Friday morning, the victim was identified by the LA County Medical Examiner’s Office as 46-year-old Jose Quezada from Carson. LAPD investigators said Quezada was struck by a single bullet, and they believe the shooting was a case of gang violence. Quezada was loved in the community and police confirm he had no criminal history or gang ties. His wife, Sandra De Mora, told FOX 11 he was a wonderful and caring person who helped his community. She said he was always cooking for events at the park.

Security Guard At Hollywood Nightclub Beaten To Death

A security guard was beaten to death at a Hollywood nightclub Sunday morning. The beating occurred at about 2 a.m. at Dragonfly Hollywood at 6510 Santa Monica Blvd., near Wilcox Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The security guard was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said. It was unclear if the assault was gang-related. The victim's name has not been released. One Man Dead, Three People Wounded In Watts Shooting

One man was killed and another man and two females were wounded in a shooting in Watts, authorities said Sunday. The shooting was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday at 2100 block of East 99th St., according to a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center. Arriving officers found a man between the ages of 25 and 30 dead at the scene, the officer said. A 29-year-old man and two females whose ages were not available took themselves to a hospital for treatment of and had stable vital signs, he said. Suspect information was not available.

Driver Arrested After Fatally Striking Pedestrian Outside 7-Eleven In South LA

A man walking into a convenience store in South L.A. was killed by a driver after she crashed into the store while he was walking in. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident happened at the 7-Eleven on the corner of West Century Boulevard and Figueroa Street around 10:10 p.m. Saturday night. Officers were sitting at a red light in a nearby intersection when they observed a female driving in reverse and crashing into parked vehicles, authorities told KTLA. “She continued to reverse her vehicle, striking a pedestrian who was walking into the [store],” LAPD said. The victim, identified only as a 58-year-old man, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident is not being investigated as a crime, police said.

2 Men Hospitalized After Being Shot In South L.A. 

An unknown suspect opened fire in South Los Angeles on Friday evening, sending two victims to the hospital. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to the area of 106th Street and Towne Avenue in the Green Meadows neighborhood around 8 p.m. after receiving a call from gunshot victims. The victims, identified only as two men aged approximately 34 and 37 years old, were walking along 106th Street towards Towne Avenue when gunshots rang out, police said. The men realized they were shot and called police while the gunman fled the area on foot. Both men were transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition. No suspect description has been released. It is unknown whether the shooting is gang related, LAPD said.

Man Shot To Death In East Los Angeles

A man was shot to death Saturday night in East Los Angeles. The shooting was reported at 7:32 p.m. in the 400 block of South Vancouver Street, near James A. Garfield High School, according to the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, sheriff's officials said. Sheriff’s Homicide detectives were conducting a crime scene investigation and had not released information about a suspect or suspects, nor the events that led to the shooting. Girl, 15, Goes Missing In City Terrace Area Of Unincorported L.A. County

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Saturday circulated a photo of a 15-year-old girl who went missing in the City Terrace community of unincorporated Los Angeles County. Athena Naima Lozano was last seen about 2 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of North Hazard Avenue, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported. Lozano was described as a 5-foot, 3-inch tall Latino female weighing 100 pounds with red hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black tank top and blue-checkered pants. The sheriff’s East Los Angeles station urged anyone with any information regarding Lozano’s whereabouts to call them at 323-264-4151. California Man Recorded Himself Stabbing Woman To Death, Shared Video On Facebook: Police

A man allegedly stabbed a woman to death in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday and then posted a video of the slaying to Facebook, authorities said. The footage helped police track down the suspect, who was later identified as 39-year-old Mark Mechikoff. He was arrested about 30 miles south of where the victim was found dead in a San Mateo apartment complex. "While the motive for stabbing the victim is still under investigation, we do know Mechikoff mercilessly filmed the last moments of the victim’s life and posted the video to Facebook, then fled the area," San Mateo police said in a statement. Prosecutors identified the victim as Claribel Estrella. The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office on Friday charged Mechikoff with a single count of murder with enhancements for inflicting great bodily injury and the use of a knife. His arraignment was scheduled for Friday afternoon, where an attorney will be appointed to represent him, DA Stephen Wagstaffe said in an email. San Mateo police referred additional questions — such as what kind of Facebook page Mechikoff posted the video to and whether it has been removed, as well as what the footage depicted — to the DA's office, which did not immediately respond.

‘A Split-Second Decision’: Florida Officer Saves Girl Held By Man At Knifepoint

A police officer shot and killed a man who was holding a knife to a girl’s throat inside a store at a busy South Beach shopping district Thursday evening, a law enforcement source told the Miami Herald. Around 5:30 p.m., Miami Beach officers responding to a “disturbance call” found a man threatening two people with a knife at 901 Lincoln Road, police said on Twitter. One of the officers, police say, then discharged his firearm, striking the suspect. According to a law enforcement source, he was threatening the girl with a knife inside of a Victoria’s Secret store in the Lincoln Road shopping district. Officers told the man to put the weapon down, per the source. After he didn’t drop it, the source added, an officer shot him in the head area. “He had to make a split-second decision,” Robert Hernandez, president of Miami Beach’s Fraternal Order of Police, said about the officer who shot the suspect. “He saved the young girl’s life. It was heroic.” Paramedics took the man to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Unit in critical condition, police said. Authorities confirmed late Thursday night that the man died at the hospital. According to police, “the two victims are safe and speaking with detectives.” The police officer also was unharmed.

Los Angeles Residents Have Until Aug. 1 To Pay Back Rent For First 18 Months Of Pandemic

Ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline for repayment of back rent for the first 18 months of the coronavirus pandemic, Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman have released resources for Angelenos to stay in their homes. "We will only be able to solve our city's homelessness crisis if we work to prevent people from falling into homelessness in the first place," Bass said in a statement Thursday. "On August 1, certain COVID-19 rental protections will expire and I have worked with our partners on the City Council as well as the Los Angeles Housing Department to prepare resources for those who maybe impacted." She added that the city will do all it can to prevent a "wave of evictions" as they continue to confront the homelessness crisis. Raman in a statement said the city will utilize all of its tools, including the package of renter protections the council put in place earlier this year, plus Measure ULA dollars and an eviction defense program to prevent Angelenos from becoming homeless due to back rent.
