3 Cases Of Bird Flu Confirmed In L.A. County
Three cases of avian flu have been confirmed in Los Angeles County, public health officials announced on X, formally known as Twitter. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed that a raven in Eagle Rock, a Western Gull in El Segundo, and a Canada Goose in Alhambra tested positive for the virus. So far, the virus hasn’t been found in any domesticated or wild mammals. Thirty cases have been reported between October 2022 and April 2023, according to public health officials. Avian flu can be easily transmissible between other birds, including poultry and pet birds. There is also some risk that it can be passed along to dogs, cats, or wild mammals, especially if they eat infected, uncooked birds. To combat the virus transmission, residents are urged to take down bird feeders and communal bird baths and keep pets away from sick and dead birds. Freshly dead birds, especially larger ones like geese, ducks, and shorebirds, should be reported to local animal control agencies for potential collection and testing, health officials said.
