Former LA Councilman Huizar Faces Sentence In Corruption Case

Former Los Angeles City Councilman José Huizar is scheduled for sentencing Friday in a corruption case involving cash and benefits received in exchange for help in approving downtown LA real estate projects. Huizar, 55, of Boyle Heights, pleaded guilty a year ago to federal counts of conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and tax evasion. He faces up to 13 years in prison and payment of more than $1 million in restitution to the city. Huizar's defense attorney is seeking a 9-year sentence. U.S. District Judge John Walter is expected to announce a decision Friday morning in Los Angeles federal court. The former District 14 representative used his position of power to shake down real estate developers for at least $1.5 million in cash and benefits in exchange for helping projects through the city's approval process, prosecutors said. Huizar represented the district, including downtown Los Angeles and surrounding communities, from 2005 until his resignation in 2020.

Man Stabs 2 Idaho K-9s Before Fatal OIS

A man who was shot and killed by police after stabbing two dogs and refusing to comply with law enforcement in a Southwest Boise neighborhood has been identified. The Ada County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday that the man was 37-year-old Jeremiah Gaver, whose name might ring a bell because of his family’s history in Boise and involvement in a police shooting in Arizona eight years ago. The coroner listed his cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner as homicide. The Ada County Sheriff’s Office provided further information about the incident through a news release on Wednesday afternoon. The office said one of its deputies on patrol saw a man with a tarp over him at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. He was holding a cane and “looking over fences into the backyards of homes” on South Maverick Way, just south of Amity Avenue west of the Boise Airport, the release said. “The deputy talked to the man, who refused to identify himself, explain what he was doing, or remove his hand from underneath the tarp,” the sheriff’s office said. Additional sheriff deputies and Boise Police Department officers arrived and continued attempting to speak with Gaver.

Video: Oklahoma Trooper Thrown Back As SUV Slams Into Vehicle During Traffic Stop

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer was sent hurtling to the ground when an SUV slammed into a vehicle during a traffic stop, dash camera video shows. In the video, captured Jan. 18, Trooper Jesse Gregory can be seen talking with a driver pulled over along Interstate 40, according to a highway patrol news release. Neither he nor the driver seem to notice the black SUV heading toward them until the split-second it drifts onto the shoulder and crashes into the stopped vehicle — launching Gregory backward as glass and rubber litter the ground, video shows. The black SUV spins, then flips over onto the grass and, seconds later, Gregory can be heard calling for help on his radio. Despite how violent the impact was, nobody was killed or seriously injured, the state highway patrol said, adding that Gregory and both drivers have been treated and released from the hospital. “We show this video as a graphic reminder of the consequences of distracted or impaired driving,” the state highway patrol said. The near-miss could have gone very differently, OHP officials said.

3 Cases Of Bird Flu Confirmed In L.A. County

Three cases of avian flu have been confirmed in Los Angeles Countypublic health officials announced on X, formally known as Twitter. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed that a raven in Eagle Rock, a Western Gull in El Segundo, and a Canada Goose in Alhambra tested positive for the virus. So far, the virus hasn’t been found in any domesticated or wild mammals. Thirty cases have been reported between October 2022 and April 2023, according to public health officials. Avian flu can be easily transmissible between other birds, including poultry and pet birds. There is also some risk that it can be passed along to dogs, cats, or wild mammals, especially if they eat infected, uncooked birds. To combat the virus transmission, residents are urged to take down bird feeders and communal bird baths and keep pets away from sick and dead birds. Freshly dead birds, especially larger ones like geese, ducks, and shorebirds, should be reported to local animal control agencies for potential collection and testing, health officials said.

L.A. County Looks To Require Rental Units To Stay Cool In Summer

This winter, renters in frigid Los Angeles apartments have some ammo when they complain to their landlord about busted heating and drafty rooms: Legally speaking, rental units aren’t supposed to dip below a balmy 70 degrees. Come summer, there are no such protections for the reverse issue: stifling, air-conditioning-less homes. The county has no maximum temperature for rental units, an issue advocates say leaves vulnerable renters sweltering in the hot months as California grapples with the effects of climate change and extreme heat. Los Angeles County’s supervisors want to change that. On Tuesday, the board voted to direct staff to start drafting an ordinance that would set a maximum temperature for rental units across much of the county. Supervisor Kathryn Barger cast the sole no vote. “Tenants should have the opportunity to escape extreme heat in their own homes without fear of being evicted or burdened with additional rent fees,” said Supervisor Hilda Solis, who authored the motion along with Supervisor Lindsey Horvath.
