Murder Suspect Taken Into Custody In South LA

A man wanted in connection with a homicide investigation was taken into custody Wednesday following a standoff with authorities in South Los Angeles. Officers were sent to the 600 block of West 61st Street about 4:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The U.S. Marshals were serving a warrant to take that homicide suspect into custody, but he refused to surrender, officials said, and a standoff ensued. The man was arrested after about three hours, police said. Information was not immediately available on the man's identity or on the homicide that was under investigation. SkyFOX was overhead when one person was seen coming out of the home and being taken into custody, placed inside a LAPD vehicle. It's unclear if that person was the suspect or someone possibly residing in the home. Roads in the area closed during the standoff have since reopened.

Man Dies After Being Hit By Alleged DUI Driver In South Los Angeles

A man was killed by a possible drunk driver in South Los Angeles early Saturday morning. The crash happened at around 4 a.m. when the suspect driver was driving down Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. At the same time, the victim was backing out of his driveway when the suspect slammed into his car. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the victim, only identified as a male in his 50s, dead at the scene. The suspect, a 24-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No further information was provided.

One Person Stabbed, Another Injured In Altercation On Metro Bus In South L.A.

Police have arrested a man in his 70s in connection with a stabbing that took place on a Metro bus Friday afternoon in South Los Angeles. Two people were injured in the altercation, which took place around 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of Western Avenue and 76th Street in Manchester Square, authorities said. One victim, identified only as a man in his 50s, was stabbed in the neck and treated for a laceration. Another person suffered minor unspecified injuries during the attack, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson. Both were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition. The suspect, who was wearing a knee brace, was apprehended roughly 20 minutes after the incident, police said. Authorities have not released his name, but said he was in his 70s. The stabbing took place aboard bus line 207, which runs from Hollywood to Hawthorne via Western Avenue, according to Maya Pogoda, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. It was not immediately clear what prompted the altercation. “We remain grateful for our bus operators who continue to deal with societal issues while transporting our passengers across the county,” Pogoda said in a statement.

Cars On Fire, Dealership Damaged During Overnight Street Takeovers Across Los Angeles

Cars were on fire and a dealership was broken into at the scene of two chaotic street takeovers in the Los Angeles area overnight, authorities said. The first takeover happened around 12:08 a.m. Tuesday at Florence and Normandie avenues in the South L.A. area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Police confirmed that a car was set on fire. Video from the scene shows the car engulfed in flames in the middle of the intersection as a crowd of spectators watched from the sidewalk. No arrests were made and no injuries were reported in that incident. The second takeover happened around 3:30 a.m. at Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street in the University Park area. The LAPD says that fireworks appeared to be involved in the takeover. Video from the scene shows people running away as a loud boom sounds off in the distance. The footage also shows another car on fire, but police couldn't say if it was set on fire on purpose or if it was accidental. Authorities confirmed that somebody broke the windows of a nearby car dealership. Officers walked through the dealership but it did not appear that anything was stolen, and no cars were damaged inside.

Man Arrested After Breaking Into Tujunga Home While Homeowners Were Inside

A man has been arrested after he broke into a home in Tujunga while the homeowners were inside early Wednesday. Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the 9800 block of Tujunga Canyon Place to reports of a burglary at around 1:48 a.m. Residents called 911 after they said a man was knocking on doors and was seen running through the back yard of at least two homes. Officers found the man inside one of the homes where the homeowners were inside at the time. He was taken into custody and no injuries were reported.

Southern California Burglary Crew Arrested In Theft Of $500K Worth Of Jewelry

Two men from Los Angeles, believed to be a part of an organized robbery crew that stole high-valued jewelry and designer products with an estimated value of $500,000, are in custody, officials announced Tuesday. In a news release by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, authorities say 39-year-old Anthony Pena-Gomez and 40-year-old Carlos Riquelme-Montecinos targeted neighborhoods in Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage in July 2024, gaining access to the residential properties by breaking glass doors and windows. “The suspects are believed to be associated with an organized burglary group out of the Los Angeles area that commits burglaries nationwide,” the release stated. On Aug. 27, members of the Riverside Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, along with members of the Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage special enforcement teams and the Palm Desert Burglary Suppression Team, served a search warrant in the 400 block of Cottage Home Street in L.A.’s Elysian Park neighborhood. Both suspects were arrested, and a search of the residence recovered a handgun stolen out of Burbank, jewelry from residential burglaries in Rancho Mirage and Fullerton, burglary tools, fake identification and multiple cell phones. Pena-Gomez and Riquelme-Montecinos were booked into the John Benoit Detention Center for burglary and are being held on $500,000 bail.

‘Nothing Short Of A Miracle': San Diego Officer Injured In Crash That Killed Colleague Released From Hospital

A San Diego police officer critically injured in a fiery crash following a brief pursuit in Clairemont eight days ago was released from the hospital Tuesday to continue his recovery at home, police and hospital officials said. Officer Zachary Martinez, 27, suffered burns, a broken back and multiple facial injuries when the patrol car he was in was broadsided by a teen speeding in a BMW sedan Aug. 26, officials said. Martinez was ejected from the car. He was so badly injured, the first officer who came upon him — who also trained as an emergency medic — thought he was dead, police Chief Scott Wahl said. The medic took his pulse, the chief said, and “was surprised when he found one.” “Today is nothing short of a miracle,” Wahl told reporters gathered outside Sharp Memorial Hospital, where Martinez had been treated. The officer driving the patrol vehicle, 30-year-old Austin Machitar, was killed when it was hit near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Doliva Drive and burst into flames. Wahl said he did not expect to hear that Martinez was being discharged from the hospital Tuesday, given the extent of his injuries. Martinez told the chief he received excellent care from nurses and doctors at Sharp Hospital and was “very grateful” and appreciated the prayers people had said for him.

Texas Deputy ‘Ambushed And Murdered’ At Houston Intersection While Driving To Work

A Texas deputy constable who was driving to work in his personal vehicle was fatally shot Tuesday by a man who walked up to his car at a Houston intersection and fired multiple times, police said. A suspect in the shooting later led authorities on a chase that ended about 60 miles (97 kilometers) away in the waters off Galveston, where the man tried swimming away to evade arrest before being captured with the help of a marine unit, according to the Port of Galveston Police Department. The deputy was identified as Maher Husseini, who had worked as a Harris County constable since 2021. Investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting and whether the deputy had been targeted, Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said. Police were investigating whether it might have been an instance of road rage, he said. “It’s an awful thing for the community, for someone to lose their life, someone that’s dedicated their life to public service,” Diaz said. “It is absolutely tragic.” According to preliminary information, Husseini was not in uniform when he was shot, Diaz said. Bullet holes could be seen through the passenger side window of an SUV at the scene. Husseini was taken to a Houston hospital where he was pronounced dead, Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said.

Water Quality Warnings Issued For More Than 10 Los Angeles County Beaches

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is urging people to stay out of the water at more than 10 beaches after bacteria levels failed to meet health standards when last tested. The locations affected include the entire swim areas of Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey, Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach and Walnut Creek at Paradise Cove in Malibu, and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. Warnings have also been issued in Malibu for the Marie Canyon Storm Drain at Puerco Beach, Ramirez Creek at Paradise Cove, Topanga Canyon Beach, Solstice Creek at Dan Blocker County Beach and Pena Creek at Las Tunas County Beach; and in Santa Monica at the Santa Monica Pier. Temperatures Soar Into Triple-Digits As Late-Summer Heat Grips Southern California

Temperatures will climb well into triple-digits over a widespread area of Southern California with the warmest days of the week on the horizon. Temperatures through Friday in the valleys and inland communities will reach triple digits. Expect highs in the mid- to high-90s in the Los Angeles basin and high-80s on the coast for the rest of the week. Temperatures have increase by a few degrees each day this week with the high expected to reach the mid-90s in the LA basin by Wednesday. Triple-digit heat will spread into the valleys by Thursday. Nighttime temperatures will remain in the 70s in the valleys this week. Inland areas will see highs around 105 to 110 degrees. Some parts of the Inland Empire and San Fernando Valley might reach 112 degrees. An excessive heat warning for all of Southern California with the exception of coastal communities will begin Wednesday and continue through Friday. Thursday and Friday will be the warmest days of the week, when temperatures will run 10 to 15 degrees above average. "Dangerous heat is on the way, and it's going to be like this for the next three days, if not hotter," said NBCLA forecaster Shanna Mendiola. "We don't get a break overnight. Those warm lows are going to stick with us for the next few nights." Elevated wildfire conditions will accompany the hot and dry weather in the mountains, valleys and deserts.
