A Los Angeles police officer was shot and wounded in a gunfight between a suspect in Watts late Monday night.

A call came in around 11 p.m. near 111th and Antwerp streets. Authorities said officers were doing extra patrol around the Nickerson Gardens housing complex when they tried dispersing a group.

One of the people in the group fled on foot and the officers began chasing him. During the foot chase, the suspect took out a handgun and a shooting ensued.

One of the suspects was shot and killed. During the shooting, an officer was hit and taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck tweeted out that he visited the officer and they are expected to make a full recovery.

The officer was released early Tuesday morning.

The investigation was ongoing.
