Man sentenced to 12-year prison term for running down undercover officer

A man who rammed his car into a Los Angeles Police Department narcotics officer nearly three years ago and seriously injured the officer was sentenced today to 12 years in state prison.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg imposed the term on Joe Gubencio Ortiz, 26, who pleaded guilty Sept. 29 to one count each of attempted murder and sale, transportation or offer to sell heroin.

Ortiz struck the officer during a narcotics investigation near Fourth and Dacotah streets in Boyle Heights on Nov. 20, 2007, as officers were trying to stop him in connection with a drug sale, according to police.

Ortiz backed out of a driveway at a high rate of speed, nearly striking one of the officers, and then drove south on Dacotah Street and struck the undercover officer, who suffered two broken femurs, a shattered left knee and a dislocated right knee and facial injuries and underwent 10 surgeries.

Along with the prison term, the judge also ordered Ortiz to make restitution to the officer. A restitution hearing is set Dec. 13 at the downtown courthouse.
