WASHINGTON - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says California will receive $136 million in economic stimulus money to strengthen law enforcement programs throughout the state.
Agencies plan to use the money to reduce the flow of illegal drugs. Those efforts would include eradicating marijuana gardens, destroying methamphetamine labs and attempting to dismantle drug-trafficking organizations.
The Justice Department announced the funding Monday. The grant program used to distribute the additional money - the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program - is a key source of federal funding for drug task forces. States are required to distribute much of the money to local law enforcement agencies. In all, the $787 billion stimulus bill set aside about $4 billion for law enforcement.
