Memorial Honors Fallen Officers in California

It was a solemn reminder of the sacrifice made everyday by law- enforcement as they serve and protect the dangerous streets of California.

"Police officers today have an extremely difficult, dangerous job and it's only fitting that we pay tribute to their service," said Jerry Dyer, Fresno Police Chief.

On Tuesday law-enforcement agencies from across Fresno County came together to honor all California peace officers who have lost their lives while serving their communities.

California has the highest death toll in the nation, when it comes to law-enforcement killed in the line of duty.

Over the years the state has lost more than 14,000 including 12 from the Fresno Police Department and 10 officers from the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Margaret Mims says the memorial is a time to acknowledge the sacrifice made not only by the officer but by the family they left behind.

"They gave up a member of their family. We gave up a member of our law-enforcement family and this is important every year to honor that loss," said Mims.
