LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Investigators and family members are calling for help in the search of a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian. The deadly incident happened in the 10600 block of Hoover Drive near 107th Street in South Los Angeles.
The victim was killed just steps from his home. Authorities say 42-year-old Rigoberto Pivaral was left lying in the street for hours until his sister wandered out of their home and found his body.
Family members of Pivaral said breaking the tragic news of his death to his wife and five children in Guatemala was extremely difficult. The family said Pivaral was the breadwinner of his family. The victim's sister-in-law, Tonia Vargas, says it's overwhelming for them to come to grips with the sobering reality.
"It's terrible, you know? It's just not right. If that person is still out there, I hope he can hear me. And if he did it with no reason - and if it was an accident - then please turn yourself in," said Vargas.
Detectives say the victim was run over after attempting to return home from working an overnight shift. "The body was located around 6:30 in the morning. So we suspect the accident occurred somewhere between 1 and 6:30 in the morning," said Jimmy Render, Los Angeles Police Department.
Margarita Pivaral said her brother, Rigoberto, was the oldest of 10 brothers and sisters. She said her family lost their rock. "If somebody sees something, please call in and let everybody know because this cannot be happening. A hit-and-run is not right and a lot of people can help us if they do know something," said Margarita through a translator.
"He was a father, a husband with five children. And we're certainly looking for the support of the public to help us in uh capturing the individual that committed this horrific incident," said Render. Detectives say they need help catching the hit-and-run driver. If you have any information, you are asked to call detectives at (877) LAPD-24-7 or (877) 527-3247.
