Copper Wire Thieves Plunge L.A. Neighborhood Into Darkness
Once the sun sets in the Pico-Union area, workers and residents approach the streets with trepidation. Here, and in other parts of Los Angeles, copper-wire thieves have stripped them of their sense of safety. “I had a guy pull a gun on me one night,” said Albert Robles, owner of Robles Carburetors, at Hoover and West 18th streets. Emboldened, he believes, by the cover of darkness, the man was breaking into a car and didn’t want any interference from Robles. At the Domino’s across the street, Luis Rojas has worked for three years delivering pizzas. Nowadays, he says, fellow pizza delivery drivers are often scared to leave their cars to go knocking on doors along the gloomy corridor of South Union Avenue between Washington and Venice boulevards. “I used to walk to work,” said Rojas, who lives a brisk 10-minute walk from his employment. Now, it’s frightening. “People can follow you.” This new layer of fear has become a fact of daily life in Pico-Union, said lifelong resident Aurora Corona. According to locals, entire blocks go dark at night in this L.A. neighborhood that lies west of downtown. One of L.A.’s most densely populated neighborhoods, it is home to about 40,000 people within 1.67 square miles.

LA County Detectives Ask For Help Solving Brutal Killing Of 27-Year-Old Karla Terron
Homicide detectives are asking for the public's help solving the killing of Karla Terron, a 27-year-old San Fernando woman whose body was found near a freeway off-ramp in Bakersfield in late 2022. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department held a news conference Thursday in San Fernando revealing new details in the case and asking for specific bits of information that could help investigators. However, detectives declined to disclose a possible motive or any potential suspects, saying they are withholding those details to protect the investigation. "We hope people will have the courage to come forward and help investigators identify the information they are looking for," LA County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Modica said. "This information will help make this an even stronger case." On Dec. 17, 2022, around 5 a.m., Terron's body was found engulfed in flames on the southbound State Route 99, near the off-ramp for Hosking Avenue in Bakersfield, authorities said. She was the mother of two young children, ages 10 and 8, according to Modica, who said her family has been devastated by her death.

LA County Trio Plead Not Guilty To Armed Robberies Of 10 Pharmacies
Two South Bay men and one Harbor-area woman pleaded not guilty Thursday to committing 10 armed robberies of chain pharmacy stores over a six-week span, sometimes assaulting and injuring their victims. Makai Yusef Sanders, 22, of Hawthorne; Kenyatta Kamar Jones, 22, of Hawthorne; and Diavion Deshawna Mouton, 22, of Carson face federal charges including Hobbs Act robbery — robbery affecting interstate commerce — and using and carrying a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. A magistrate judge in Los Angeles federal court previously set a Dec. 3 trial date. According to court documents, the robberies of Rite Aid and Walgreens stores in Long Beach, Bellflower, South Los Angeles, Pasadena, Whittier, Lakewood, Monterey Park, Burbank and Glendale took place between Aug. 9 and Sept. 19. Federal prosecutors allege Mouton served as the driver while Sanders and Jones entered the stores about an hour before closing, armed with handguns and stealing victims’ cell phones. The pair then went to the stores’ staffing offices and took money from store safes, prosecutors contend.

Man Convicted Of First-Degree Murder In Shooting Death Of Iowa Officer
Jurors on Thursday convicted an Iowa man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a police officer who was trying to arrest him. Kyle Ricke, 43, faces life in prison for the murder of 33-year-old Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram, the Des Moines Register reported. Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 21. Cram was on patrol in Algona, a community of about 5,300, when he learned of an arrest warrant for Ricke on a charge of harassment, investigators have said. The officer saw Ricke and told him he would be arrested. That’s when Ricke shot him, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Prosecutors said Ricke shot Cram eight times. He allegedly told his sister days before the shooting that he would not go back to jail. Video shows Ricke shouting, “Too late!” at Cram after the officer fell to the ground. Video also shows Ricke then trying to shoot himself, but there were no bullets left in his gun. He fled but was arrested later that day in Brown County, Minnesota, which is about 100 miles (161 kilometers) north of Algona.
