$50,000 reward renewed in 2006 murder of City Terrace girl

A $50,000 reward for information in the 2006 murder of a 14-year-old girl from City Terrace was renewed Thursday by L.A. City Councilman Jose Huizar.

Los Angeles Police Department detectives recently uncovered new leads in the cold case of Emmery Munoz, whose body was found suffocated at the loading dock of an abandoned Boyle Heights business, Huizar said.

"Five years later, we want the family to know that LAPD and the city of Los Angeles have not forgotten about Emmery Munoz, and now we need the public's help to bring justice for her family," Huizar said.

LAPD officials declined to comment on specific leads they have in the case.

A reward was first offered in 2006 and received extensions until May 2007, said Huizar spokesman Rick Coca. It will be officially reinstated Tuesday by the City Council.

"You can get lucky with these kinds of things," Coca said. "As long as people come forward with credible information, we don't care what their motivations are. We just want them to come forward."

The City Terrace family reported Munoz missing two days before her body was found on Jan. 25, 2006, by LAPD Hollenbeck detectives. She was last seen by her mother, Maria Mejia, Jan. 20, 2006.

L.A. County coroner's officials determine she died of asphyxiation, Coca said.

"I just want the person who did this to pay for what they did," Mejia said. "There's a lot of pain and suffering. I just want the people to get caught."

Anyone with information is asked to call (877) 527-3247.
