Alleged Gunman With Stash Of Weapons Found Inside DTLA Apartment Released On Bond

Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department discovered a stash of weapons inside a downtown LA apartment unit following a reported shooting over the weekend. Neighbors called the LAPD just before 1 a.m. Sunday after hearing gunfire at the apartment building located at the intersection of West Olympic Boulevard and South Olive Street. Officers heard between 15 and 20 more shots after arriving at the scene. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Roy Allen Henson, was taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with discharging a firearm and his bail was set at $35,000. Once inside the suspect’s apartment unit, they found what looked like an apparent weapons factory including alleged ghost guns, ammunition and gear – all of which were recovered from by the cops. Jail records indicate Henson was booked and was later released on bond Sunday.

Hit-and-Run Victim Found Dead In Road In North Hollywood 

The search is on for a driver who fatally struck a pedestrian and fled the scene in North Hollywood early Sunday morning. According to preliminary information from the Los Angeles Police Department, the collision occurred on Lankershim Boulevard around 4:15 a.m. Officers were dispatched to the area on calls of a body on Lankershim just south of Valerio Street, authorities said, and upon arriving at the scene, located the pedestrian lying in the roadway. The victim, identified by police as a 40-year-old Hispanic woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. No information on a suspect or description of a vehicle was immediately available.

Mid-City Homeowner Gets Into An Intense Shootout With Armed Intruders

A Mid-City homeowner turned the tables on armed intruders when he pulled out a gun of his own on Saturday evening. Frightening security camera video showed the homeowner walking up to his front door when a masked gunman ran up behind him. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the homeowner nonchalantly turns around and tosses a cup of hot tea before pulling out a handgun. The intruders immediately ran away from the man's home while exchanging gunfire with their would-be victim. "They took off firing at me," said the homeowner, who wished to stay anonymous. "I returned fire, firing at them. They left." The homeowner said he feels unsafe, especially since this is not the first time that he and his family have been a target. In June, burglars broke into his home and have yet to be caught.

Flower Vendor Stabbed In Frightening Hawthorne Attack Caught On Camera

A Los Angeles street vendor was stabbed in what appears to be a random attack that was captured on video. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a man seen in the video who attacked 65-year-old Juan Diaz near the 105 Freeway overpass in Hawthorne on Halloween. Diaz, who was selling flowers on the side of the road, suffered several stab wounds. “I was just selling my flowers… and he started staring at me,” Diaz said. “Gave me a mean look. I put my head down, and then he came to me and started pushing me. He had a blade in his hand and pretty much wanted to kill me.” Diaz tried to defend himself with a scooter to block the attacker. He fell to the ground, hoping the man would stop. Video captured the sound of witnesses yelling at the man. But the brutal assault didn’t stop. “When I saw him stab my chest, I didn't feel anything until 30 seconds later,” Diaz said. “I looked down and saw that I was covered in blood. And a lady came to me and said, ‘Sit down, sir,’ and I answered, ‘Why?’ And, the lady again said, ‘Sit down, you are bleeding a lot.” That woman turned out to be a nurse. She provided aid at the scene before Diaz was taken to a hospital.

Orange County Mother Sentenced For Horrific Torture Of 10-Year-Old Stepdaughter

An Anaheim woman was sentenced to nearly 15 years in prison for torturing her stepdaughter and abusing three other children in her household. Mayra Chavez, 33, was sentenced Friday to seven years to life, plus another seven years and 10 months for torturing her 10-year-old stepdaughter, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Chavez was also found guilty of abusing three other children, including another stepdaughter and two of her own kids. Court documents said the young girl was found severely tortured with a “broken neck, bone sticking out of an unhealed sore, and bruises from head to toe as a result of months of increasingly humiliating and brutal cruelty.” The girl weighed only 50 pounds and was unresponsive when she was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Orange County in August 2022, the DA’s Office said. She was taken to the hospital by her father, Domingo Junior Flores, who told hospital staff the girl had hurt herself and fallen down the stairs. A nurse told officers it was the worst case of trauma and child abuse she had ever seen.

Captain Found Guilty Of ‘Seaman’s Manslaughter’ In Boat Fire That Killed 34 Off California Coast

A scuba dive boat captain was convicted Monday of criminal negligence in the deaths of 34 people killed in a fire aboard the vessel in 2019, the deadliest maritime disaster in recent U.S. history. Jerry Boylan, 69, was found guilty of one count of misconduct or neglect of ship officer following a 10-day trial in federal court in downtown Los Angeles. The charge is a pre-Civil War statute colloquially known as seaman’s manslaughter that was designed to hold steamboat captains and crew responsible for maritime disasters. Boylan is the only person to face criminal charges connected to the fire. He could get 10 years behind bars when he’s sentenced Feb. 8, though he can appeal. His public defenders declined to comment as they left the courthouse. The verdict comes more than four years after the Sept. 2, 2019, tragedy, which prompted changes to maritime regulations, congressional reform and several ongoing civil lawsuits. Relatives of those killed hugged one another and wept outside the courtroom Monday after the verdict was read.

Man Sentenced To Death In 2019 Killing Of Alabama Officer On Drug Task Force

A Madison County jury on Friday sentenced to death a man who admitted to shooting and killing an on-duty Huntsville police officer. Billy Clardy III was 48 years old when LaJeromeny Brown shot him three times on Dec. 6, 2019, during an undercover drug operation in north Huntsville. “I know, in so many words, he’s telling the family and friends to rest” said Sgt. Joe Kennington, the head of the drug task force of which Clardy was a member. “‘Hey, we won. We got this.’” Clardy’s father, Billy Clardy Jr., died while on duty as a Huntsville police officer in a car accident in 1978. Brown, a Chattanooga man in Huntsville that December day four years ago to sell 100 pounds of marijuana, killed Clardy during an undercover drug operation. The jury on Tuesday found him guilty of capital murder. On Friday, the jury completed its task by determining the sentence following three full days of deliberation. After Brown received his death sentence and was being escorted from the courtroom by sheriff’s deputies, his mother repeatedly asked, “Can I hug my son?” Brown raised his right hand toward his mother and nodded as he left as if to say he was OK. The jury voted 10-2 for death — the minimum number of votes required to impose the death penalty. That’s a lower threshold than a capital murder conviction, which mandates a unanimous verdict.

Florida Deputy Injured When Pursued Driver Hits Cruiser Head-On With Stolen U-Haul

A deputy was injured after the driver of a stolen U-Haul drove in the wrong lane directly at cruisers, according to a Lee County Sheriff's Office Facebook post. The pursuit began on Nov. 2 when a license plate reader determined the U-Haul was stolen. When deputies approached the U-Haul at a gas station, the driver and one passenger fled. At one point, deputies, who were not a part of the initial pursuit, drove towards the fleeing vehicle while other cruisers pursued from behind, according to the post. The U-Haul crossed the road’s center line and drove at the cruisers in the wrong lane. It struck one cruiser, continued to drive recklessly and hit another cruiser head-on. The deputy involved in the head-on collision was injured by the impact and taken to the hospital, according to the post. The U-Haul came to a stop and the driver, Michael Kurpaska, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, criminal mischief, hit and run with damage and felon in possession of ammunition. The passenger fled the scene and is still at large.

A Georgia woman says she’s grateful to be alive after she and her young son were saved from a fiery wreck. Two Rome Police Department officers, with help from some good Samaritans, pulled Samantha Bostick and 4-year-old Liam to safety Wednesday, Nov. 1 after their SUV was involved in a crash and caught fire, police said. The three-car wreck happened at around 8:30 a.m. at a busy intersession in Rome, per an incident report. Much of the rescue was captured on police body camera video. “We’re just incredibly grateful,” Bostick told the Rome News Tribune. “It was just a pure blessing that they were there.” Investigators said Bostick was heading east on Highway 411 when she struck a Freightliner truck that ran a red light. The truck then hit a third vehicle, police said. Officer Dow Turrentine was helping a fellow officer with an unrelated traffic stop nearby when he heard the crash, according to police. He ran to the scene and saw an SUV had rolled into the roadway and was starting to emit smoke. The vehicle’s engine compartment soon caught fire and the flames spread to the main cabin — where Bostick and her son were trapped, per the report. All the doors to the vehicle were locked.

Fire Crews Extinguish Sunland Brush Fire

A brush fire burned through light-to-medium vegetation in the Sunland area Monday, but no injuries were reported and crews managed to halt the blaze with no structural damage. Los Angeles Fire Department fire crews responded shortly after 2 p.m. to the fire, which was burning uphill in the 8300 block of Big Canyon Drive, and they were assisted by Los Angeles County and Angeles National Forest crews, according to LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey. Crews fought the flames by ground and air, and halted the fire’s advance within an hour. There were no reports of evacuations, although the fire initially threatened several nearby structures, Humphrey said. It was unclear what may have sparked the fire.
