Councilman Dennis Zine calls for review of city employee travel

As the city prepares to send a large delegation to Copenhagen for the Climate Control Conference, a city offical called Tuesday for a review on how much travel the city pays for.

"We are sending people all over the world at a time when we aren't giving raises to police officers and we are reducing the hours at fire stations," Councilman Dennis Zine said.

"I'm not saying we should end all travel. I just want a report analyzing how many trips city employees take and whether they are justified. We are running up huge tabs to pay for some of this travel."

Zine insisted his proposal was not aimed at Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's trip to Copenhagen next week that will include a city delegation of up to 10 employees.

"It is not about that," Zine said. "I am just concerned about all the travel that is being done and who's paying for it. If it's taxpayer money, we should know and have a process for approving it."
