Man Charged With Conspiracy In 2017 Killing Of Prominent Hairdresser In Woodland Hills

A third suspect who was recently arrested and charged with murder in the 2017 stabbing death of a prominent hairdresser at his Woodland Hills home pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a newly added count of conspiracy. The conspiracy count alleges that Christopher Austin, 38, conspired with Monica Sementilli and Robert Louis Baker to kill Sementilli's husband, Fabio. Austin was in court Wednesday and is now formally charged with conspiracy, in addition to a previous charge of murder. For nearly seven years, he was on the loose, but he was arrested earlier this month in Washington state and extradited to California. In 2017, famed hairstylist and beauty industry executive Fabio Sementilli was stabbed to death on the patio of his Woodland Hills home. Los Angeles police then arrested Sementilli's wife Monica and her lover Robert Baker. They were charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors allege that Austin is claiming that on the day of the murder, he was there when Baker got the call from Monica that Fabio was home alone and the coast was clear.

Southern California Men Bought More Than 120 Guns In Utah, Resold Them In California: DOJ

Three men from Southern California are facing federal charges after they allegedly traveled to Utah to buy more than 120 guns, then resold those firearms in California without a license. Manuel Ivan Sanchez, 37, of Helendale; Ricardo Amezcua, 45, of South Gate; and Fernando Nava, 35, of Hemet, are charged with conspiracy, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a news release. They were arrested Wednesday morning and are due to appear in U.S. District Court in downtown L.A. this afternoon. Prosecutors say that from November 2022 to July 2024, the men “frequently made short trips to Utah to purchase firearms – including various pistols and semiautomatic rifles – from licensed firearms dealers,” to whom they lied about being Utah residents. “Listing a Utah residence was important because Utah-based licensed firearms dealers generally cannot sell firearms to California residents,” the DOJ said. “To buy the guns anyway, each defendants obtained either a Utah driver’s license or ID card listing a Utah address. They then used these fraudulently obtained cards to buy guns from Utah-based licensed firearms dealers.”

NorCal Parents Arrested On Suspicion Of Killing, Burying Their Toddler In The Wilderness

Two Redding parents were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of killing their 2-year-old child and burying her body in the wilderness, authorities said. Riley Royal, 28, and Amanda Royal, 24, were accused of murder with special allegations and of child abuse resulting in death, according to a news release from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. They are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday. On Jan. 7, Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call for a wellness check on a 2-year-old at the 20000 block of Sunset Lane in Redding, but were unable to find the child, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies called the parents, who said they were not home. However, deputies later found the couple hiding in the house attempting to avoid law enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office alleged. Deputies then interviewed the parents and learned that the child had died three months prior and been unlawfully buried, authorities alleged. Upon hearing this grisly news, deputies called in detectives from the Major Crimes Unit who took over the investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Video: Michigan Officers Break Windshield, Rescue Woman From Flaming Vehicle

Two Mt. Pleasant Police officers are being credited for saving the life of a woman from a burning vehicle after an accident Sunday night — the eve of National First Responders Day. Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Paul Lauria on Monday showed a body cam video from the scene of the accident during a regular meeting of the city commission. Telling commissioners that public safety jobs are often thankless and dangerous, Lauria said he wanted to show a small piece of what police and firefighters do on a regular basis. Lauria showed the two-minute video that began with Sgt. Jonathon Straus and Officer Tyler Burrows responding to an accident shortly before 10 p.m. at the north Mission roundabout, running toward the vehicle when it was fully engulfed in flames, and using an axe to carefully cut a large enough hole in the windshield to get the 22-year-old Sterling Heights woman out of the car, which was on its side. “I can guarantee you, another 20 seconds and there would have been a death on our hands,” Lauria said after the body cam video ended, noting that the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Lauria said police and firefighters don’t need to be thanked for what they do, but he wanted to highlight on the day set aside to honor first responders the dangers they face, never knowing what the next day, hour or minute will bring.

Public Advised To Stay Out Of These Los Angeles County Beaches

Officials are warning the public to avoid several Los Angeles County beaches due to high levels of bacteria on Wednesday. The ocean water warnings will remain in effect beginning Oct. 30 until further notice. Excessive bacteria and debris can seep from nearby city streets and mountain areas to contaminate ocean waters, especially around discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers, said the L.A. County Department of Public Health. The warning also includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand. People who enter the ocean during this time could become ill, especially children, the elderly or those who are immunocompromised, officials said.

11 Residents Infected With Dengue After Los Angeles County Detects Two More Cases

Public health officials have reported two more locally acquired cases of the mosquito borne illness dengue in Los Angeles County, bringing the total to 11 cases in recent weeks. One of the cases was reported in Baldwin Park, where health officials are currently investigating a cluster of cases. It's now the seventh discovered in the area. The other case was reported in a resident of Hollywood Hills, officials said. Other cases have been detected in Panorama City and El Monte since the start of August. Despite the unusual amount of locally acquired cases, public health officials are urging residents to remember that dengue is extremely rare in places where it has not been previously transmitted by mosquitos. "These two additional cases raise concerns about the potential for continued local spread of dengue in our community," said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer. "Healthcare providers play a critical role in promptly identifying and managing patients infected with dengue."

De León, Jurado Battle Over City Council District 14

Voters in the 14th City Council District will soon settle the tumultuous, high-profile contest between incumbent Kevin de León and progressive challenger Ysabel Jurado, who are vying to represent downtown and northeast L.A. neighborhoods. In the March primary, tenant-rights attorney Jurado received 24.52% of the vote, claiming first place in a field of eight candidates. De León trailed with 23.39%, according to figures from the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. With neither candidate receiving more than 50% of the votes, the top two finishers moved to a runoff, set for this coming Tuesday. Their Election Day showdown takes place two years after a leaked 2021 recording captured de León participating in a conversation with two other now-former council members and a now-former union leader, during which crude and racist language was used. It sparked a scandal in which multiple officials, all the way up to President Joe Biden, called for de Leon to resign.

Councilwoman Traci Park Pushes For Reunification Resources To Ease Strain Of Homelessness On Westside

Councilwoman Traci Park introduced a motion on Wednesday aimed at redirecting resources toward family reunification efforts, in response to the rising number of unhoused individuals arriving in Council District 11 and across the Westside from outlying regions. In her motion, Park emphasized the district's draw as a major destination, noting, “Known as a prime destination, the area attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually to its coastline and amenities, with millions passing through Los Angeles International Airport and regional transit hubs.” A 2023 survey by Metro underscores the challenges, reporting that nearly 600 unhoused individuals disembark nightly within the district when the last trains conclude service. Many find themselves sleeping on sidewalks, in parks, or tucked into building alcoves; 59 individuals frequently gather at the E Line terminus in Santa Monica alone.
