Drive-By Shooting Leaves 14-Year-Old Boy, 3 Others Hospitalized In South L.A.
Four people, including a 14-year-old boy, were wounded in a drive-by shooting as they were crossing the street Sunday evening in South Los Angeles, police said. The group was walking shortly before 8 p.m. when a vehicle approached the intersection of East 51st Street and Avalon Boulevard in the South Park neighborhood, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman said. It’s unclear how many people were in the vehicle, but someone pulled a gun and fired on the pedestrians as they were crossing the street, Eisenman said. It is not known whether any words were exchanged before the shooting, police said. The shooting victims, all of whom were male, were hospitalized, authorities said. The Los Angeles Fire Department transported the 14-year-old boy to a hospital, according to the LAPD. The other three victims were able to drive themselves to a hospital. All four were listed in stable condition Sunday evening. After the shooting, the vehicle drove away in an unknown direction. There is no information about the suspect or suspects, or their vehicle, and it’s unclear whether the shooting was gang-motivated, police said.

KTLA Credited With Helping LAPD Apprehend Suspect
L.A.’s Very Own KTLA 5 helped the Los Angeles Police Department take a suspect into custody on Sunday. LAPD Central Bureau Assistant Commanding Operations Officer Lillian L. Carranza confirmed early Sunday afternoon that a suspect featured in a video published to the KTLA website, YouTube and social media pages was caught after an “alert citizen” recognized the man on the news and called police. The video in question depicted him kicking down the door of a home in L.A.’s Atwater neighborhood. “After receiving the LAPD community crime alert and watching the [KTLA 5] morning news, a citizen called 911,” Carranza said on X. “Officers quickly responded and arrested the suspect.” His name was not released, but he was described as a 44-year-old Hispanic man. The exact location of where he was arrested was also not disclosed. The homeowner who provided the original video to KTLA says it depicted the eighth time the man had attempted to break into their residence and the first time he was able to make it inside. They were eventually able to chase him out of their home and call the police but remain understandably shaken.

Man Dies After Being Electrocuted On Metro Red Line Tracks Near Universal City
A man died Saturday after falling onto Metro Red Line tracks in a tunnel between Universal City and North Hollywood. Transit Service Officers attempted to detain the man who was trespassing on the Universal Platform. After a use of force occurred, the man fled into the tunnel and was later discovered electrocuted. Officers were called to the 5300 block of Lankershim Boulevard, south of Chandler Boulevard, at 2:51 p.m. They requested an ambulance for a person on the tracks who was unconscious and not breathing, according to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im. The 30-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no indication that one of the electric-powered trains struck the man, but Im said, "He was in a place where he should not be." "Metro expresses its sympathy for the tragic death that occurred in a cross passage between the North Hollywood and University City stations on the B Line this afternoon," said Metro spokesman Jose Ubaldo. "Metro reminds the public to never walk on train tracks and to stand behind the yellow line on all rail station platforms. Please look and listen for trains in both directions and never run to catch the train."

LAPD Investigating Hate Crime After Hollywood Synagogue Vandalized For Second Time In Recent Weeks
Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a Hollywood synagogue was vandalized for the second time in weeks. Security camera footage shows the moments that two men wearing hoodies cross Melrose Avenue and stop in front of the Kahal Ahavas Yisroel Synagogue on Thursday, one of which can be seen smashing the front windows with an unidentified object. Doni Dror, a board member at the synagogue, says that the video shows the man using either a hammer or a baton to smash each window, all while recording with the other suspect's phone. "They didn't take anything," he said. "They just smashed and ran." The two men can then be seen as they walk back across the street and away from the place of worship. As a result, Los Angeles Police Department investigators have begun to look into the two incidents as potential hate crimes, which Dror thinks is undoubtedly the case. "It's hard for me to imagine that these two consecutive incidents, so close together with our building, it's hard to say that it's not," he said. The incident is just the latest in a string of localized reactions as the fighting the Middle East continues after nearly nine months.

‘Unacceptable Level Of Crime And Violence’: Minneapolis PD Seeks Help From Other Agencies After Crime Spike
Minneapolis police are seeking additional support following a violent and deadly weekend that left two men dead from shootings, one man dead from a stabbing and seven others injured by gunfire, CBS News reported. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara addressed the situation during a news conference on July 28. “This weekend we’ve seen an unacceptable level of crime and violence.” In response, O’Hara called an emergency command staff meeting, invited outside law enforcement partners and implemented a multi-jurisdictional plan to address the surge in violence, according to the report. “It’s incredibly important that we continue to push for staffing the police department so we’re able to prevent some of these incidents better, but if nothing else certainly, respond to and investigate them thoroughly,” O’Hara stated. To bolster efforts, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will assist with patrols and investigations. Community groups and violence interrupters will also be active on the streets, according to the report. Earlier this month, the city approved a new police contract, which includes a nearly 22% pay increase over three years for officers, with rookie officers set to earn more than $90,000 annually, according to the report.

The Park Fire Is Now One Of California's Largest On Record As It Burns Area Nearly Half The Size Of Rhode Island
A burning car that authorities say was pushed into a gully less than a week ago has now sparked one of the largest wildfires in California history. As of Sunday, officials say the Park Fire has grown to more than 360,000 acres – marking the biggest wildfire since 2020 and the seventh-largest to ever burn across the state. In CalFire's latest update on Sunday night, officials said the Park Fire had grown to 360,141 acres and was at 12% containment. That size – about 563 square miles – is about half the size of Rhode Island and is almost 12 times bigger than San Francisco County and slightly larger than the city of Los Angeles. That size also makes it the seventh-largest fire in California history. According to Reuters, the Park Fire is now nestled in ranking between the LNU Lightning Complex Fire of 2020 that burned 363,220 acres, and the North Complex Fire of the same year that burned 318,935 acres. The August Complex Fire that also took place in 2020 remains the largest in state history at more than 1 million acres.

Will Voters Bring Ethics To Los Angeles County Government? Some Aren’t So Sure
For the past month, the big news out of Los Angeles County government has been the plan to expand the Board of Supervisors, which has divided political allies and produced heated debates at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration. That proposal, planned for the Nov. 5 ballot along with several other changes to county government, has come under fire from some on the board, who warn that it still has an unknown price tag. Critics say the proposal, which would expand the board from five to nine members, comes with a sweetener to make it irresistible to voters: a new ethics commission charged with rooting out wrongdoing. Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, who co-authored the proposal, described it as “once-in-a-century ethics reform.” She also argued that, given the events of recent years, an ethics watchdog is long overdue. Last year, former Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas was convicted on corruption charges involving votes he cast at the county. (He has filed an appeal.) The year before that, real estate developer Arman Gabay was sentenced to four years in prison for giving bribes to Thomas M. Shepos, a high-level official in the county’s real estate division. (Shepos was also convicted.)
