Convicted Killer Released 6 Years Into 50-Year Sentence Under DA Gascón Is Charged With New Crimes
A convicted murderer who was freed from jail last November after his case was sent back to juvenile court was charged Thursday with a new series of crimes, including leading Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies on a pursuit. Andrew Cachu -- charged now under the name Andres Benjamin Cachu -- pleaded not guilty to one felony count each of fleeing a pursuing peace officer's motor vehicle and driving against traffic, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession for sale of methamphetamine and possession for sale of cocaine, along with one misdemeanor count each of driving under the influence of a drug, possession of a controlled substance with a firearm and possession of cannabis for sale. The criminal complaint includes allegations that Cachu was previously convicted in October 2016 of murder and robbery. Cachu, now 25, was released from jail last Nov. 10 after a state appeals court panel ordered that case involving the March 31, 2015, shooting death of Louis Amela be sent back for a hearing to determine if his case should be handled in juvenile court or adult court as a result of a change in state law because he was 17 at the time of the crime. Cachu -- who was prosecuted as an adult and was serving a 50-year-to-life state prison sentence for the killing before his case was sent back -- admitted the shooting while in a jail holding cell with two undercover deputies who surreptitiously recorded their 45-minute conversation, according to the appellate court panel's November 2017 ruling.

Brawl Breaks Out In Los Angeles' Fashion District
A video shared on social media shows a violent brawl that broke out in Los Angeles' Fashion District last weekend. The nearly 90-second clip of the Sunday chaos features multiple men swinging at each other with crutches in Santee Alley. It happened in the 1100 block of Santee Street between E. 11th and E. 12th streets. A trash can is hurled by one man, and several bystanders filmed the fight. The witness who took the video, Karissa Nachor, told FOX 11 that she and a group of around 12 people were visiting Santee Alley when a man came out of a store and "aggressively" asked them to move. Nachor said the man started pushing a cart toward her and her boyfriend and began to call her boyfriend a racial slur. Although security was called, according to Nachor, they did not do anything. That's when the man allegedly pushed her boyfriend and tried to steal his crutches. Nachor said security used pepper spray and the brawl eventually ceased. She has filed a police report. The Los Angeles Police Department responded to the area, confirming that the store owner filed a report, and they are continuing to investigate the incident.

More Crashes, Climbers And Chaos On New 6th Street Bridge
Another day, another crash on the 6th Street Viaduct. The latest collision on downtown L.A.'s newly constructed bridge occurred about 2 a.m. Friday morning when a driver crashed into the back of a pickup truck that was parked on the bridge, according to Los Angeles police. The truck was stopped in a “no parking” zone. Dozens of curious onlookers quickly gathered around the crash site. Videos posted on social media show vehicles parked on the bridge, while some pedestrians scaled the bridge’s massive arches, hoping to catch a view of the scene. Since its opening nearly two weeks ago, the new half-billion-dollar bridge, which connects downtown with the city’s historic Eastside, has proved popular not only with motorists but taggers and street racers. As a result, police and city officials have grappled with crashes, street takeovers and vandals. Police have increased patrols on the bridge, and the department’s street-racing task force is keeping an eye on the area, officials said. Transit officials are looking at putting in higher fencing and some kind of traffic median that were not in the original plans. Eastside Councilman Kevin de Leon said in a statement this week that steps are being taken to protect the bridge. On Tuesday his office said the city will add cameras on the bridge to deter and identify drag racers and other illegal activity.

Coronavirus Cases Start To Flatten In L.A. County As Decision On Mask Mandate Looms
Weekly coronavirus cases are showing early signs of flattening in Los Angeles County, but they remain at significantly elevated levels as a decision on whether to impose a new indoor mask mandate looms on Thursday. It’s too soon to say whether it’s a blip or the beginning of a sustained trend. Since cases began increasing in late March, there have been three times where they began to drop, only to be followed by steeper increases later, with transmission worsened by increasingly ultracontagious variants capable of reinfecting people within several weeks. But the recent flattening in cases was something that L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer also noted publicly recently. Should a flattening in cases be followed by a steep decrease in the coming days — something that cannot be predicted with certainty — it is possible that Ferrer could postpone a universal mask mandate that was set to be enacted on Friday if conditions do not improve by then. “You can see here this sign of plateauing cases of the past week, and we do hope this continues,” Ferrer said at a press briefing Thursday. “I do want to note, however, that over the past two months, we have seen some small dips that were then followed by additional increases, so it does make sense for us to continue to be cautious, given the relatively high number of cases we see.”
