The Orange County Sheriff's Office identified a deputy shot and killed during a traffic stop on Wednesday night.
At a news conference on Thursday, Sheriff Jerry Demings said his force is mourning the loss of Deputy Brandon Coates.
Demings said investigators were working to determine how a routine traffic stop ended in a fatal shooting.
Authorities said the traffic stop happened at about 8:27 p.m. Coates indicated on his radio that he had pulled over a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.
"He came up on the radio, gave details about the traffic stop in the area of 45th Street and Nashville Avenue. Within about seven minutes of the traffic stop, we began to receive 911 calls in reference to a deputy down," Demings said.
Authorities said they've learned the traffic stop resulted in some type of struggle that led to Coates deploying his Taser gun.
"At some point, Deputy Sheriff Coates was shot in the head twice and succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Orlando Regional (Medical Center), where the trauma team worked on him diligently for quite some time," Demings said.
An extensive manhunt was conducted following the incident, and at least one witness said there were two people in the suspect's pickup truck. The original suspect was quickly found with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The dead suspect was identified as Brandon Lyals, 29. He had an extensive criminal history and had served nearly eight years in prison for his past crimes. However, none of the previous charges were violent crimes.
Lyals criminal history dated back to early 1999, when he was convicted on several charges involving grand theft and stolen property at the age of 18 years old.
In 2001, Lyals was again facing grand theft and burglary charges. He was sent to prison on March 25, 2002. He was released on Dec. 7, 2009.
Authorities said a witness at the scene got the Lyal's license plate number, and deputies tracked the white pickup truck to the Alhambra Court Apartments.
