Los Angeles firefighter Glenn Allen, fatally injured when a water-saturated ceiling collapsed on him last week during a blaze in the Hollywood Hills, will be remembered by colleagues, family and friends at a funeral Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Friday.
Allen, 61, was injured in house fire that broke out late Wednesday in the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive and died at a hospital Friday afternoon.
His daughter gave birth Saturday night to what would have been his first grandson. The 6 pounds, 7 ounce boy was said to be healthy.
Allen was among six firefighters injured when the ceiling collapsed. A plastic line on the homes sprinkler system apparently burned through and filled the ceiling with water, fire officials said. The other firefighters were not believed to [be] seriously hurt. One may have suffered a fractured ankle.
"Los Angeles police officers join our brethren firefighters in mourning the death of Los Angeles firefighter Glenn Allen," said Paul Weber, president of Los Angeles Police Protective League, said.
"The death of Allen is a tragic and sad reminder of how much gratitude we owe to first responders, who routinely put their lives on the line for the public's safety," Weber said. "Our thoughts are with the Allen family, whose lives will be changed forever. But we hope they can take soled in knowing that Glenn was a hero and that as his extended public safety family, we will always be there to support them."
The owners of the house, who had been living there for only about a week, escaped the blaze unharmed. Firefighters estimated the damage at $250,000.
