L.A. fire crews request police backup during standoff with barricaded suspect

Fire crews responding to a medical call ended up calling for police backup after the situation escalated into a standoff with a barricaded suspect. According to a Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer, a call came out at 7:47 p.m. Sunday regarding a medical incident in the 7200 block of Franklin Avenue in Hollywood. About half an hour later, at 8:15 p.m., fire units called for Los Angeles Police Department backup, referencing a gun on the scene. By 8:34 p.m., the suspect was reportedly barricaded. Video shows the barricade situation took place inside an apartment building; armed officers were seen in and around the building as the area was blocked off. The suspect, whom LAFD described as a 37-year-old man, was eventually taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital at 9:45 p.m., the PIO stated. The LAPD could not provide many details on the incident right away, only confirming they responded to a request for backup from the fire department and that a gun was recovered.

1 dead in Boyle Heights homicide

One person was shot to death in a suspected homicide in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles Monday night, the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA. LAPD officers responded to a reported shooting on the 2800 block of Glenn Avenue around 8:01 p.m. At the scene, officers found one victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The suspected shooter is an unknown male. He was seen leaving the area on foot. Police have not provided any details on the victim’s identity at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

Man Charged in Girlfriend’s Stabbing Death in Sylmar

A man accused of fatally stabbing his live-in girlfriend in Sylmar was charged Monday with murder. Sergio Jimenez Rodriguez, 31, is also facing an allegation that he personally used a knife during the crime last Wednesday, according to the criminal complaint. He is accused of killing 35-year-old Nancy De La Torre, who was found inside the apartment she shared with the suspect, police said. She was found in the unit with multiple stab wounds. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police said the victim and suspect “were in a cohabiting relationship and … this was an incident of domestic violence.” It remained unclear what prompted the deadly attack. Witnesses told police at the scene of the stabbing that a man was seen running from the area after the attack, police. Officers began an extensive search for the suspect Wednesday night. Around 5 a.m. Thursday, officers descended on the area of Hubbard and Eighth Street, about four miles from the murder scene, and set up a perimeter as they searched for the man. By 10 a.m., the suspect was taken into custody in that area, police said.

Woman With Knife Holes Up in Apartment Building Near Van Nuys

A knife-wielding woman was barricaded in an apartment complex near Van Nuys Monday, and a SWAT unit was deployed to try and get her to surrender, authorities said. Officers responded at about 7:30 a.m. Monday to an apartment complex in the 13500 block of Sherman Way, just east of Woodman Avenue in the Valley Glen area after getting a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. A woman with a knife was barricaded inside the building, a Los Angeles Police Department officer said. No further information was immediately available.

Knife-wielding man threatens diners inside Los Angeles restaurant

A man who was chasing and threatening people with a knife in the San Fernando Valley overnight was taken into custody, police said. Officers responded to reports of a knife-wielding man chasing people in a Ralphs parking lot on the 7200 block of Woodman Avenue around 12:15 a.m. Monday, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Chaves told KTLA. Video shows the man, still holding the knife, entering a nearby Norms restaurant, where he allegedly began threatening people inside. The suspect then gets into another confrontation with a man outside the restaurant as sirens can be heard approaching in the background. After attempting to casually walk away from the scene, the suspect suddenly takes off running in an apparent effort to avoid the arriving officers. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Multiple arrests made in downtown LA after sex toys thrown during anti-ICE protest, officials say

Multiple people were arrested after an anti-ICE protest took a bizarre turn in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, officials said. Authorities said during a non-permitted protest around noon Saturday, April 11, an estimated 200 to 300 demonstrators held sex toys outside the Metropolitan Detention Center. The rally was part of a nationwide event held at ICE facilities nationwide. The group Frontlines TPUSA said the theme was a "f--- ICE" demonstration, which is why sex toys were waved and smacked against the fence around the facility. They were also thrown at police vehicles, video shows. The Los Angeles Police Department declared the gathering an unlawful assembly by 2 p.m. after protesters blocked traffic. The LAPD estimated about six people were arrested after refusing to leave the area.

Resident beaten, $150,000 in jewelry stolen in violent Hollywood Hills break-in

A 75-year-old man was beaten after encountering two intruders Saturday night inside a Hollywood Hills home. Two men smashed through a side glass window of the home at about 9:30 p.m. in the 7100 block of Macapa Drive. When the residents arrived home, the intruders were still in the house. The victim was punched several times as the men left the house. Details about the man's condition were not immediately available, but the LAPD tells NBC4 Investigates that he was not hospitalized. The men, dressed in black clothes and gloves, left in a silver sedan. Details descriptions of the robbers were not immediately available. The men left with about $150,000 in jewelry, the LAPD said. No arrests were reported early Sunday.

‘Where is your daughter?’ intruder shouts in viral Ring video of California home break-in

A Ring camera video out of Northern California has gone viral after capturing the terrifying moment a man violently forced his way into a family’s home where the mother and daughter were inside. The video, shared on social media, shows a man in a long trench coat kicking the front door of a home in Fairfield on April 7, punching the Ring camera and demanding that the homeowner open up. He repeatedly asked through the camera, “Where is your daughter?”When he couldn’t kick his way through the front door, police say he gained entry through a sliding glass door. The Fairfield Police Department on Saturday identified the suspect as Jason Nichols, 30, and said he was arrested after the woman’s husband came home and confronted him. “The homeowner’s husband, who was away at the time, observed the suspect through a home security camera and immediately returned to the residence,” Fairfield police officials wrote on Facebook. “As the suspect entered the home, the homeowner returned, armed himself with a shovel, and confronted Nichols. A physical altercation ensued, during which both the homeowner and Nichols sustained head injuries.”

Stabbings on New York subway leave 3 hurt as officers shoot and kill knife-wielding man

A man with a machete who attacked three people randomly at a major New York City subway station on Saturday morning was shot and killed by police, authorities said. Officers responding to a 9:40 a.m. emergency call of an assault at the 42nd Street-Grand Central station encountered the man. He was behaving erratically, repeatedly claiming he was “Lucifer,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a news conference. Tisch said he was ordered to drop his weapon 20 times but refused to comply. She said ultimately an officer shot him twice when he advanced toward the officers with the knife extended. “Our officers were confronted with an armed individual who had already injured multiple people and was continuing to pose a threat,” Tisch said. “They gave clear commands. They attempted to de-escalate. And when that threat did not stop, they took decisive action to stop it and to protect New Yorkers on one of the busiest train platforms in the city.”

Dashcam: Suspected DUI driver slams into cruiser as Fla. deputies dive out of the way

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office released dash camera footage showing officers diving out of the way before a driver struck a cruiser. The April 8 incident began when deputies stopped a driver. They were standing in front of a cruiser when they spotted a vehicle approaching at high speeds. Deputies dove out of the way as the driver slammed into the back of a cruiser. “This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our deputies face during everyday tasks that most people might consider routine,” the sheriff’s office stated. “A simple traffic stop can turn into a life-threatening situation in an instant.” The driver was charged with DUI, according to the release.
