Southland Cities Seek Court Order Blocking LA County Zero-Bail System

A dozen Southland cities filed an 11th-hour court action Friday in hopes of halting the implementation of a zero-bail system in Los Angeles County that will eliminate cash bail for most people arrested of non-violent or non-serious crimes, allowing them to be released with a citation to appear in court at a later date. The zero-bail system is scheduled to take effect Sunday. But in court papers submitted to Los Angeles Superior Court Friday, 12 cities contend that the switch to zero-bail represents a threat to public safety. "There is and has been grave public concern regarding public safety in light of reduced enforcement and criminal consequences for various categories of `low-level' offenses that, despite the nomenclature, have profound and significant impacts on the day-to-day life of whole communities of plaintiff cities and others within the county," the municipalities argue in court papers. With the zero-bail system taking effect Sunday, it was unclear when or if the cities' request for an injunction blocking the move might take place. The zero-bail schedule was announced by the Los Angeles Superior Court in July, with an effective date of Oct. 1. It was unclear why the cities waited until the last minute to file a legal challenge. "It is our duty to this community to ensure the safety of those live here, work here, and visit," Glendora Mayor Gary Boyer said in a statement Friday. "The zero-bail schedule fails to support local leaders in their pledge to protect their residents, and that is unacceptable."

Connecticut Officer Wounded In Deadly Ambush Returns To Duty

Wounded Officer Alec Iurato, who fatally shot a man who authorities say unleashed a barrage of gunfire and killed two fellow officers last year, has returned to work, Police Chief Brian Gould said. "I can confirm that Officer Iurato has returned to work and is currently assigned to our Training Division getting acclimated," Gould said Wednesday. Iurato was shot in the leg on the night of Oct. 12 when he, Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy were ambushed as they responded to a Redstone Hill Road home. They had received a report of a possible domestic dispute between Nicholas Brutcher and his brother, Nathan, according to the Connecticut State Police. Wielding what has been described as a high-powered rifle, Nicholas Brutcher opened fire on the officers from behind as they stood outside his home's side door, firing more than 80 rounds, according to state Inspector General Robert Devlin Jr. Body-worn footage shows Iurato standing behind a tree as Brutcher fired one shot. Iurato began retreating toward a patrol car for cover, and more than 20 rounds were fired in rapid succession. Iurato then shot and killed Brutcher with a single shot from his handgun.

Man Dies After Car Plunges Off Cliff In San Pedro

A man was killed when his car careened off a cliff into the ocean in San Pedro on Saturday night. Authorities received calls about 10:30 p.m. that a car had driven off the side of a cliff on South Meyler Street and West Paseo Del Mar onto the rocky shore of Wilder’s Addition Park. Three Los Angeles Fire Department divers pulled a man from the wrecked coupe, which was wedged upside down between rocks in the pounding surf, LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey said. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Humphrey said. Rescue crews were uncertain if anyone else had been in the car at the time of the crash, so they used a spotlight and helicopter infrared to search the shoreline, but no one else was found. The Los Angeles Police Department, which is investigating the incident, has not determined what caused the car to go over the cliff.
