LAPD Officer Injured When She Was Ejected From Patrol Car After It Was Stolen

A Los Angeles police officer was injured early Sunday morning after a man stole her patrol vehicle while she was inside it and then was later ejected from the cruiser. The unnamed officer had been working a security detail at 12th and Figueroa streets around 3:30 a.m. when a man approached her vehicle and managed to get inside, according to the department. “The suspect drove off with the police vehicle and at some point the officer was ejected from the vehicle,” according to the department’s summary of the incident, which was posted on the social media platform X. The suspect drove the vehicle north of Figueroa and was in a collision before leaving that scene and crashing on 7th and Figueroa streets. Photos of the scene posted by KTLA-TV show the police SUV crashed into a pole, its front end severely damaged as an overturned bike and scooters lay amid debris on a sidewalk. Police said the suspect got out of the patrol vehicle and attempted to flee, but was apprehended. The officer was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition. The suspect was evaluated at the scene and “cleared to be transported to the station for arrest processing,” the department summary said. A department spokesperson said no other information was available.

Three Hospitalized After Gang-Related Shooting In Van Nuys

Police are investigating a gang-related shooting that left three people wounded in Van Nuys late Saturday evening. They were dispatched to the 14700 block of Delano Street at around 9:30 p.m. after learning of gunshots in the area, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators say that the shooting happened when four people inside of a car opened fire into a building in the area before fleeing. Three men were hospitalized in stable condition after the incident, according to police. SkyCal flew over the scene shortly after officers arrived, where they could be seen setting up a large perimeter as they began their investigation. No details were provided on the suspects or a motive in the shooting.

Fallen Motorcyclist Fatally Run Over By Hit-and-Run Driver In L.A.

Two hit-and-run drivers remain at large after a motorcyclist was struck and killed in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood Saturday morning. The crash happened near the busy intersection of South Avenue 20 and North Broadway at around 7:40 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. An investigation revealed that a suspect, possibly driving a Ford F-150 truck, ran a red light which caused the motorcyclist to fall off his bike and onto the street. The suspect did not stop and continued driving away. Seconds later, another oncoming vehicle ran over the victim’s body and also sped away, authorities said. The victim was rushed to a local hospital where they later died from their injuries. Residents in the neighborhood said the high-traffic intersection is known for dangerous drivers. No suspect descriptions are known as the deadly hit-and-run remains under investigation. Officers are searching the area for surveillance footage of the collision. Naked Man Runs Through South LA Traffic, Gets Hit By Car

A bizarre scene unfolds in South Los Angeles as a naked man runs through traffic. "It was just crazy, a naked man jumping out of the bush from the roof and onto the street," says Jerry Garcia, who pulled out his phone and began recording. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to a call from Slauson Avenue and Edgemar Avenue in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The naked man eventually got hit by a car and the person who took the video of the incident says he was covered in blood. "Just speechless because you'd never expect a naked man running in front of you during your day," Garcia said. Despite being struck by a car, the man still got up and walked away. Garcia remembers seeing a dazed look on the man’s face. "Just very confused; I don’t know what he was on or what was going on through his head, but yeah, very confused, like kind of out of it," Garcia said. The LAPD says the man tackled an officer who responded to the scene. With so many cases of drug-induced violence and people suffering from mental illness, Garcia emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant while on the road.

Southern California Man Convicted For Murder After Fleeing To Mexico, Turning Himself In

The Santa Ana Police Department announced a man has been convicted of second-degree murder for the 2020 slaying of a 57-year-old woman. Officers made a grisly discovery on Oct. 26, 2020 when they responded to a call about an unconscious woman in a vehicle located in the 600 block of West Russell Street. When they arrived, they found the body of Natalia Gamino Jaimes. She had been reported missing four days earlier from the city of Lake Forest. After Jaimes’ death was ruled a homicide, investigators identified Jose Valdez Jimenez as the suspect. Detectives served several search warrants and tried to contact Jimenez several times, before determining that he had fled the country. Although Jimenez had escaped to Mexico, authorities were able to get in contact with him by phone. In January of 2021, Jimenez called a detective and confessed that he had strangled Jaimes to death and drove her body to Santa Ana, leaving the woman inside a vehicle. Authorities began the extradition process between the U.S. and Mexico and began to zone in on capturing Jimenez.

Ohio PD Officer Killed In Ambush Used Last Breaths To Warn Colleagues Of Danger

Newly-released body camera footage sets the scene for the ambush killing of Euclid Police Department Officer Jacob Derbin, who warned other officers of danger while being shot, FOX 8 reported. The May 11 incident occurred when Derbin and two other officers responded to a woman’s plea for help regarding threats from an ex-lover. Body camera videos showed the woman expressing her fear to the officers, saying, “I don’t feel safe standing right here and he shot my brother. He is texting that he is going to shoot me and my mother.” During the response, Derbin went to the backyard to search for the suspect when he was ambushed and shot, according to the report. Despite his injuries, Derbin managed to warn his fellow officers about the suspect’s location, an act that Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer described as the “total work of a hero.” Days earlier, the suspect involved in the shooting had been accused of shooting the woman’s brother and had outstanding warrants for a series of crimes and parole violations, according to the report. Following the incident, a standoff with police ensued, ending when the suspect took his own life, as confirmed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. The community and the Euclid Police Department mourn the loss of Derbin, who came from a family deeply rooted in law enforcement, according to the report. “I am absolutely devastated by the loss of our officer,” Meyer said. “Officer Jacob Derbin is a hero. He did everything right.”

11 Injured In Shooting In Savannah, Georgia

Police in Savannah, Georgia, are investigating a shooting that injured 11 people in the city's downtown area on Saturday night. The shooting broke out just before midnight in Ellis Square, a fixture of Savannah's historic district and a popular tourist attraction. Several precincts responded at 11:55 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the area, the Savannah Police Department said in a news release issued Sunday morning. At the time, detectives were probing the incident and had interviewed witnesses as part of their investigation, which was still ongoing. Savannah police have not identified suspects or announced any arrests in the case. Everyone hurt in the shooting, including the people who suffered gunshot wounds, are adults, according to the police department, and some were transported from the scene to Memorial Health University Medical Center. Police did not share details about the nature or extent of those injuries but said in Sunday's news release that "as of now, no deaths have occurred because of the incident." They told CBS affiliate WTOC that at least 10 people were believed to be hurt as a result of the gunfire. All 11 people received treatment overnight for their injuries, which police said were not considered life-threatening, WTOC reported.

Birmingham Police Down Nearly 300 Officers As Violent Crime Surges

Amid mounting reports of deadly violence, the Birmingham Police Department is operating with nearly 300 fewer officers than the city has set aside money to pay. There are 296 unfilled positions, said Birmingham City Council President Darrell O’Quinn, citing a city department personnel report the council received in April. “That’s factual information and we hear it anecdotally from people on the street in terms of response times,” O’Quinn told AL.com. The council budgeted funding for 720 officers this year, but hiring has fallen short by nearly 300 positions. At the same time, the city faces weeks of high-profile, deadly violence, while the thinner police force deals with jumps in emergency calls, and response times lag, O’Quinn said. The city council this week approved a plan for a Citizens Observer Patrol, with volunteers — up to 200 of them — who are not police officers helping patrol neighborhoods. Officer Deangelo Hall, president of the Birmingham Fraternal Order of Police, said the shortfall of officers is a troubling problem that has multiple causes, including low employee morale due to longer shifts and high stress. “We’re having three-year, five-year, nine-year and 13-year vets packing up and leaving,” Hall told AL.com. “So obviously there are some issues there that we’ve got to iron out. We’re trying to iron out a couple of things and present a plan to the mayor’s office.”

2 Dogs Killed, Another Rescued After Fire Erupts At Canoga Park Home

Two dogs were killed and another was rescued after a fire erupted Saturday morning at a "densely packed" home in Canoga Park, authorities said. Firefighters dispatched at 7:17 a.m. to 21724 W. Napa St., just east of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, had the stubborn blaze out within 30 minutes of their arrival, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. Firefighters began an "exhaustive search" of the 1,320-square-feet, single-story home and discovered one of three missing dogs alive, the LAFD's Brian Humphrey said. Firefighters provided supportive care to the dog. The other two dogs were found dead in the smoke-filled structure. The three adult residents were away from the home at the time of the fire, Humphrey added. No human injuries were reported. The cause of the fire and damage estimates were still being investigated.

Man Hit And Killed By Train In North Hollywood

A man was hit and killed by a train in North Hollywood Saturday morning. It happened shortly before 10 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Paramedics responded to the tracks near where they intersected with Vineland Avenue, north of Vanowen Street. When they got there, they found a person had been killed after being hit by a southbound Amtrack Pacific Surfliner train. Images from the Citizen app showed crews responding at the scene, with police tape up around the tracks. The train remained at the scene for a brief time. According to the LAFD, there were 150 people on board the train at the time of the crash, but none of them were injured. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. It wasn't immediately clear why the man was on the tracks.

Behind The Scenes, The Search For The Next L.A. City Council President Is Under Way

Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian has about seven months left before he will be forced to leave his post because of term limits. Behind the scenes, his colleagues have already started discussing who should replace him. Councilmember John Lee, who represents the northwest San Fernando Valley, told The Times that multiple colleagues have approached him about their interest in the council’s top leadership post. One of them, according to Lee, is Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who recently won reelection to a third term in his South L.A. district. Councilmember Curren Price, in an interview, said he too has had conversations with Harris-Dawson about the position. “I told him I thought he would be a good president,” Price said. Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky was more emphatic, saying she supports Harris-Dawson for the job. “I like his politics,” she said. “And I think having a relationship, a close relationship, with the mayor is actually a good thing.” Harris-Dawson, in an interview, declined to say whether he has secured enough votes to become president — or even whether he has been drumming up votes. However, he confirmed that he has been speaking with his colleagues about “what they would want in a president.”
