LAPD searching for pursuit suspect after shooting in San Fernando Valley

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department are searching for a man who they say was involved in a shooting and a short pursuit in the Tarzana area early Tuesday. LAPD has set up a perimeter near Calvert Street and are going door to door checking if residents have heard or seen anything. The pursuit ensued after a shooting was reported near Corbin Avenue and Ingomar Street. One of the victims in what is believed to be a car-to-car shooting, transported themselves to the hospital. The pursuit that followed the shooting began shortly after 5 a.m. and only lasted a few minutes before coming to an end in the 91000 block of Calvert Street in Tarzana. No further details were immediately available. Vanalden Elementary School was closed due to the search. Students were rerouted to Tarzana Elementary School.

Nick Reiner pleads not guilty to murder in killings of parents, Rob and Michele Reiner

Nick Reiner pleaded not guilty to murdering his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, during a brief hearing in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Monday morning. Reiner is accused of fatally stabbing his 78-year-old father and 70-year-old mother sometime in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 at their Brentwood home, authorities have said. Their bodies were discovered in the master bedroom by their daughter roughly 12 hours later, and Los Angeles police arrested Reiner near a South L.A. gas station later that night. Appearing in a brown jail jumpsuit, Reiner barely spoke other than to say “yes” to some perfunctory questions from Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Teresa McGonigle. Because of procedural delays since the killings, Reiner’s arraignment did not occur immediately. He is now due back in court in late April, but Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said Monday it is not likely the case will move toward a preliminary hearing anytime soon because of the large amount of records that need to be reviewed. Reiner is charged with murder with special circumstances, meaning he could be subject to the death penalty. Hochman said Monday that prosecutors have not decided whether they will seek capital punishment in the case. A motive in the killing has not been disclosed, though reports have surfaced that Reiner and his parents got into an argument at a party not long before the slayings.

Downtown LA man sentenced to probation for beating his dog with a metal chain leash

A 41-year-old man will not face prison time after pleading no contest to beating his dog with a metal chain leash in his downtown Los Angeles apartment complex. Donald Jeffes, 41, was sentenced to two years of probation and 300 hours of community service. He was also banned from owning, keeping or caring for animals for 10 years. The court also ordered him to stay away from a witness. Security cameras inside the complex captured Jeffes, 41, allegedly carrying his American Micro Bully by the collar while whipping his dog with the pet's metal chain leash on March 18, 2025, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested him in April after seeing the video. "The alleged abuse captured on videos in this case is not just deplorable — it's criminal," District Attorney Nathan Hochman said last year. "In Los Angeles County, we treat animal cruelty as a serious offense that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Our message is simple: If you abuse animals, you will face real consequences."

Death of Mexican cartel leader 'El Mencho' sparks violence, tourism fears

The death of Mexico's most powerful drug lord has ignited fears of prolonged instability and economic fallout across the state of Jalisco. As the military maintains a heavy presence, local business owners and international tourists alike are questioning the future safety of the region. Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho," was killed Sunday following a shootout with the Mexican military after authorities tracked a romantic partner to his hideout in Tapalpa. The operation, which received intelligence support from the United States, led to the deaths of over 70 people during the initial firefight and resulting cartel retaliations. The crackdown comes amid intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened tariffs and unilateral military action if Mexico does not curb cartel activity. In the aftermath, cities like Puerto Vallarta have seen explosions and smoke, leading to stranded travelers and canceled flights. It remains unclear if the current military perimeter in towns like Tapalpa will become a permanent fixture or how long the retaliatory violence will persist.

85-year-old man killed in Beverly Grove house fire, LAFD says

An 85-year-old man was killed in a Tuesday-morning fire at a one-story, single-family home in Beverly Grove, officials said. Los Angeles Fire Department fire crews responded at 4:03 a.m. to the 800 block of North Crescent Heights Boulevard, between Willoughby and Waring avenues where they found a man and a woman, both 85 years of age, a department spokesperson said. Firefighters had to use a rotary saw to cut through metal bars on the home's doors and windows, LAFD Capt. Erik Scott said. Both patients were taken to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, according to Scott. The woman was listed in fair condition at a hospital. It took 54 firefighters 42 minutes to extinguish the flames, according to the LAFD. Scott said parts of the home's interior were cluttered, making the firefight more difficult, and there did not appear to be smoke alarms working when crews arrived. The department's Arson Section will be in charge of investigating the cause of the fire, as is standard in the case of a fatal fire.
