LASD patrol car struck by gunfire in Rolling Hills Estate
A sheriff’s deputy’s marked patrol vehicle was struck by gunfire Sunday in the Rolling Hills Estates area, authorities said. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD), deputies responded to a call about multiple vehicles reportedly speeding in the area around 9:08 a.m. in the 600 block of Deep Valley Drive. A deputy assigned to the department’s Lomita Station had just finished speaking with the reporting party and was driving away when he heard a loud pop coming from the rear of his patrol vehicle. After stopping to assess the situation and exiting the vehicle, the deputy discovered it had been struck by gunfire. "He observed and confirmed what appeared to be a single bullet hole on the passenger side of the trunk hatch; no exit bullet hole was found," said LASD. LASD said the deputy was not injured. Deputies, along with officers from the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, the Torrance Police Department, and the department’s Aero Bureau, set up a containment perimeter in the surrounding area to investigate the situation. Officials urged the public to avoid the area surrounding Silver Spur Road between Crenshaw Boulevard and Hawthorne Boulevard. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lomita Station at (310) 539-1661. Anonymous tips may be provided through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
LAPD detectives searching for Pico-Union hit-and-run driver that killed pedestrian in December
Los Angeles police are asking for help from the public as they work to identify and arrest the hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in the Pico-Union district back in December last year. It happened at around 11:45 p.m. on Dec. 6, 2025 near Venice Boulevard and Malvern Avenue, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department. Police say that the driver, behind the wheel of a silver 2008-2010 four-door Chrysler 300 sedan, was traveling east when they struck the pedestrian. The suspect, who hasn't yet been identified, has been described as a man between 50 and 60 years old who was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans, black shoes and glasses. Instead of stopping to help the victim, police say that the suspect fled from the scene. Police believe that the driver's car has a non-working driver's side fog light and a darker shade of paint on the driver's side door. As their investigation continues, detectives have shared a photo of the suspect and vehicle, as well as a video that they hope will help someone from the public come forward with further information that could lead to an arrest.

Man sentenced to nearly 29 years in prison for sex trafficking in Figueroa Corridor
A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to nearly 29 years in prison for sex trafficking a teen and young adult in Los Angeles' Figueroa Corridor. Derran Adkins, 26, pleaded guilty to two counts of human trafficking and admitted to beating the 17-year-old girl and the 19-year-old young woman he forced into sex work, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. In addition to the 28 years and eight months in prison, the court required Adkins to register as a sex offender for life. "The depravity of sex traffickers who prey on the most vulnerable in our community, including children, knows no bounds," LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. "This case underscores that there will be dire consequences for sex traffickers under my watch, especially traffickers who brutally torment their vulnerable young victims." Prosecutors said Adkins trafficked the two young women between 2024 and 2025. If they tried to escape or questioned him in any way, Adkins would brutally beat the victims and would sometimes mutilate their bodies, according to the LA County District Attorney's Office.

Smash-and-grab burglar targets oldest toy store in Los Angeles, escapes with thousands in merch

‘That man is a monster’: California serial child molester granted parole. Victims are outraged
A Sacramento man once described by a judge as “the monster parents fear the most” seemed destined to spend the rest of his life in prison after he was convicted of 16 counts of kidnapping and child molestation in 1999. Instead, he is now set to go free after being granted elderly parole — much to the anger and horror of some of his victims, as well as the prosecutor who oversaw his case. “He shouldn’t be breathing the same air that we’re breathing at all,” one victim, who was kidnapped and assaulted when she was just 4 years old, told The Times in an interview. “I disagree with him getting paroled out because he’s a horrible person. That man is a monster.” David Allen Funston approached children playing outside their homes in the Sacramento suburbs and used candy and toys to lure them into his vehicle in 1995 and 1996, prosecutors said. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to 20 years and 8 months in prison, as well as three consecutive sentences of 25 years to life. Now 64, he is incarcerated at the California Institution for Men in Chino. Under California’s elderly parole program, inmates are generally eligible for a parole suitability hearing if they are over 50 years old and have been incarcerated for at least 20 continuous years. The individual can then be released if the parole board determines they do not pose an unreasonable risk to public safety.
