A Massachusetts Man Wanted For Rapes 35 Years Ago Is Arrested Following A Los Angeles Police Chase

A man wanted in the 1989 rapes of two Massachusetts women is in custody following an hourlong police chase in Los Angeles Thursday. Stephen Paul Gale, 71, was arrested after leading police on the chase, US Marshals Service spokesperson Brady McCarron told CNN. The chase started just before 4 p.m. as Gale drove on the 405 Freeway at a moderate rate of speed while obeying most traffic signals, CNN affiliate KABC reported. Massachusetts officials charged Gale in May with four counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping and one count of armed robbery, according to the news release. Gale is accused of sexually assaulting two female employees of a clothing store in Framingham, Massachusetts – about 20 miles west of Boston – nearly 35 years ago, according to a news release from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. DNA evidence collected at the scene helped investigators identify Gale as the suspect through genetic genealogy, officials said. Genetic genealogy is the practice of combining DNA evidence with traditional genealogy to find biological connections between people. “This DNA evidence and the statistical results comparing the probability of relatedness provide probable cause to identify Stephen Paul Gale and led to the issuance of today’s arrest warrant,” the news release from May said.

Mob Of Teens Violently Assault Man, Break His Leg In Downtown Los Angeles

A man is recovering after being brutally attacked and robbed earlier this month in downtown Los Angeles by a mob of young people on bicycles. The Aug. 2 assault, according to the victim, Shailoobek Bazarbai Uulu, happened while he was stopped at a redlight at the intersection of Olympic Boulevard and Hope Street. Uulu said a group of teens on bicycles pulled in front of his vehicle and when the light turned green, he attempted to pass them. “When I was passing, one of them threw a bottle of water in my car,” he explained. “So, I don’t know what happened.” As he pulled over and got out of his car, he said the group of roughly 30 teens surrounded him, with the situation turning violent very quickly. Footage of the incident was captured by a witness who happened to walk up on the mob as they assaulted Uulu, stole items, including his backpack and wallet, out of the vehicle, shattered the windows and stomped on the hood and trunk of his car. “This is what L.A. has come to,” the man filming the incident can be heard saying. “Dog, I’m not even playing. I literally just parked. These kids are wild, not older than 20.” In the video, Uulu is seen barefoot, limping as he’s pushed and punched in the back of the head by several of the teens.

Video: Man Attempts To Steal Cruiser With Connecticut Officer Inside, Crashes It Into Church

A man faces several charges after police say he tried to commit suicide by cop when he attempted to steal a cruiser with an officer inside in New Haven on Sunday. Two officers assigned to the Hill South District were parked at a substation on Congress Avenue, where one went inside while the other stayed in the passenger side of their cruiser to write a report, when a man approached the cruiser shortly after 10:40 p.m., according to the New Haven Police Department. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Stacey Footman, approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and reportedly began yelling at the lone officer to get out of the car, police said. Police noted that Footman is “well known” to officers in the district from “numerous” arrests and encounters. According to police, Footman abruptly got into the driver’s seat after the officer unlocked the vehicle to get out. The policeman, identified only as Officer Roch, tried to push Footman out of the car, but he reportedly put the vehicle in drive and quickly accelerated, police said. Fearing that Footman could hit a pedestrian or another vehicle, the officer grabbed the steering wheel, which caused the vehicle to crash into a church across the street from the substation at 584 Congress Ave.
