A Harbor City man who allegedly posed as a teenager to contact underage girls on the Internet engaged in sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl, police said Tuesday.
Hugo Galindo Gonzalez, 24, was arrested Monday when Palos Verdes Estates police and FBI agents raided his home in the 23000 block of Maltby Place.
During the investigation, police "determined that Gonzalez had targeted other minor girls in the South Bay area," police said.
"We know he's an alleged predator and we are actively investigating him," Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief Dan Dreiling said. "If there are other victims, we'd like them to contact us."
Palos Verdes Estates detectives began investigating the case in August, when they learned through a tip that the 14-year-old Palos Verdes Estates girl had met with Gonzalez and engaged in sex in her home, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
Police found that Gonzalez had used multiple false identities on the MySpace social networking site to contact and arrange a meeting to engage in illegal sexual acts with the girl, Palos Verdes Estates police Capt. Mark Velez said.
The complaint said he communicated with her through MySpace messages and on cell phones. He said he was 19. She said she was 16, the complaint said.
Although the sexual acts were consensual, sexual acts with a minor are a felony.
Police said Gonzalez used the additional screen names of "Rodrigo Wright," "Chad," and "Surfs up!" Chad was supposed to be Rodrigo's cousin.
According to the complaint, "Chad" sent sexually explicit messages to the girl.
A Daily Breeze check of the "Surfs Up" site found it lists the name Rodrigo Wright, a 16-year-old Redondo Beach boy.
The site shows that "Wright" last logged in on Monday.
Gonzalez is facing potential state charges. The FBI took him into custody on suspicion of using the Internet to induce a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, a federal crime.
He appeared in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
